CW releases trailer for a new comic-based show

This was announced a while ago, but we now have a trailer for the series premiere of...



Riverdale.

I believe that I have just seen the most CW thing you could imagine.

Riverdale premieres Thursday, January 26th at 9/8c on the CW.

That's a trailer? It was 29 seconds long.

That said, I'll catch the pilot if nothing else. But I've a feeling I'll prefer the upcoming comic book series set in the show's universe, given that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be writing it directly.

IDG the appeal of something like this. It seems to be "Archie in name only" from what I've read (even the 'adult' takes on Archie lately are still recognizably the original characters) and I can't imagine the brand recognition would appeal to this show's target audience.

Well it reminds me of the "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" unauthorized parody of Peanuts

Seeing beloved childhood characters reimagined as "degenerate teenagers" has a kind of appeal

Sexing it up to make it the CW-iest show that ever CW'ed still strikes me as less weird than the 1990 To Riverdale and Back Again movie where everyone was in their thirties....

Oh man, that movie was awful. Every cliché in the book, played completely straight, from Betty deciding she has to turn "naughty" in order to win over Archie, to Big Ethel turning out to have grown up hot, to Jughead being into women deep down but just "afraid" to take the emotional risk.

As for the CW show, I hope the apparently heavily-stylized grimdarkness turns out to be a sustained parody or subversion of Hollywood's "darker and edgier" comic adaptations. Kind of like the fan-made fake Archie movie trailer from five years ago. (Note: Contains brief depictions of partner abuse and homophobia.)

Now what would be amazing would be if every character in the show was brooding and over-dramatic as per CW standards . . . except for Jughead. Jughead is still the hat-wearing, burger-munching guy straight out of the old comics.

Not a Live-Aciton version, though. they should use the Roger Rabbit effect and have him be fully animated

I might still give the edge to that "younger, edgier Stargate" segment of Stargate SG-1's 200th episode.

It's a shame the puppet version went on so long because other than that part outstaying it's welcome that is a glorious episode.
