It is revealed that Miles Warren has resurrected Ben Reilly but as a way of perfecting the process and preventing the cellular degeneration kept on killing and vivisecting Ben over an extended period of time. Ben remembers each of these deaths and is effectively trapped in a never-ending cycle of hell.

I kinda thought that the Jackal had died and come back via cloning before, since that seemed like the logical conclusion of his cloning gimmick and the old "No one could have survived that!" trope.
