I think the first time Hickman started losing me as a writer was wasting the Room of Dooms. See, later in the run, they all get destroyed by a horrible inferno or something in their brain-damaged state, and nothing else happens. A roomful of alternate Dooms, none of whom ever thought of creating backup personalities or copying their personality onto a disk! Chekov's Arsenal, if you will.
Had it been me, I'd have had the Room be the only thing which survives whatever disaster it was that disbanded the Reedence Clearwater Revival. Just a little epilogue with them floating without direction in the space between universes, all murmuring that same word.
"Doom." "Doom." "Doom."
Close in, slowly. The latest of them, somewhere at the front, looks out into the void; and then looks around, seeing the room he's in, understanding it for the first time. And who is there with him.
"Doom. Doo..m...D..."
Behind the mask, his eyes narrow. He remembers. He knows how he got here, and where he'll go next.
IIRC they last showed up sacrificing themselves to save Doom when he had to be rescued from an universe he made with an infinity gauntlet that later rebelled against him.
... That sounds like Hickman alright. "I have an interesting concept that someone else could build on. I'd better kill the ever-loving f*ck out of it."
I thought the Celestials here were written down. Much smaller than usual, and they demanded surrender as I remember. To me, thats a bit like a man paving over a field for parking stopping to demand the surrender of the ants.
They're demanding surrender because they want the Reeds to worship them. It's difficult to get worship out of charred corpses. (Difficult, but not impossible. But when they don't bow down, gotta make an example, y'know...)
