Was this the original comic? Or was this published more recently and looking back in time? The art and writing style feels more 90's and 00's.

New. This ongoing is deliberately retro, kind of the Avengers version of X-Men '92.

Never read the original run but have read the 3 issues sofar and this is amazing!

The problem with inserting retcons into Marvel history is that you really have to consider where they fit. The Kooky Quartet issues were really tightly plotted, and there was not a lot of time NOT accounted for between when the originals split and Hank and Jan returned. With DC it's so much easier, since stories just ended, and there were no dangling subplots.
