What If #60: A What If... X-Men Wedding Album

So the framing device is Uatu peering in on Scott and Jean's wedding, acting on overheard dialogue. For instance, overhearing Lorna Dane's comment of "If they did this long ago, they would have saved so much heartbreak", causes Uatu to reveal an alternate reality that answers the question:



After this wedding, the rest of the X-men decide that it's also time for them to graduate and take Professor X's teachings to the world.





The Avengers managed to defeat Krakoa, but are unable to save the captured X-men, leaving the retired X-Men to mourn them.

Back in the main timeline, Archangel remembers there was a time there might have been something between the two of them, but seeing Scott and Jean makes him think that it just wasn't meant to be. Uatu, though, finds that little cannot happen.



Jean and Warren start dating, leaving the insecure Scott to withdraw further into his shell throw himself into his work. He becomes anti-social and relentless, especially when Charles was injured during a fight with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, shunning his teammates. And when Charles reveals that he was testing them during that, Scott turns his anger on the professor as well.





Returning to the framing device, we find that Wolverine didn't attend the wedding, instead watching from afar before leaving. Uatu states that it happened after Scott and Jean had a strong relationship, and nothing happened between Jean and Logan. But, it could have.





So the Dark Phoenix stuff happens, and they end up going through the whole trial set by Lilandra.

And then the universe died. The End.

marred by the happy couple being torn apart, growing distant from one another, eventually ending with one of them being killed just because an editor had a bad divorce.

Kinda want to see what happened to Scott in that reality he joined the Brotherhood.
Bet it involved a lot of the X-Men talking about how just darn awful he was every five pages.
(And no doubt Pietro treating Wanda like property.)

And what a shock! The reality where Jean decides to go with Logan ends with everyone dying.
Quite right, too.

I like how the text is completely open that Magneto was just plain lying to Scott. Misunderstood freedom fighter? Nah, just an abusive user. Pretty sympathetic for a villain origin. Still, Scott's been through that with Diamond Jack. If Pietro got over himself and worked with Scott, they'd have a power base equal to Magneto's influence.. Hahaha oh of course Pietro's jealousy will never let it happen, but I can dream!

I really like the alternate "All-New" line-up presented here... though being able to take two speedsters by surprise stretches credibility slightly.

And Catseye is such a random choice for that team... especially since she's promptly killed off with the rest of them.

Not to mention that Catseye is of an age with Rahne, and as we saw in a previously posted What If? for her to be on the team circa-All New, she'd have to be pretty young, weird potential cat-like aging issues aside.

What If...Jean Grey was used as a prop for multiple male characters and had no actual agency of her own? I mean, why doesn't one of the stories revolve around Scott getting married to Colleen Wing, for example, or staying with Maddy Pryor?

I mean, I get it...but dang, this is all, what if character X 'won' Jean Grey? Hell, why not give us a 'What If Polaris and Cyclops fell in love?' variation, at least.

(There's a staggering lack of Jean / Wanda on the internet. All those issues of X-Men First Class, and not even a single fanfic to show for it.)

The Xavier who happily accepts Scott and Jean's departure from the school is clearly an imposter. Chameleon or something. After Krakatoa, he shows upon Scott and Jean's doorstep demanding they create a new team, probably..

Why did it matter that Scott was attractive? Was there a male pin-up ad campaign for the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants going on? Oh Scott you don't know what you're stepping into!

Worth noting Wanda is meant to be a teenager / young adult-ish there.
