Can't say I am a fan of this. The Wall is one of the strongest and most interesting female characters in superhero comics, but they keep trying to fix what isn't broken.
First they turn her into a supermodel. Even after scrapping that awful visual reboot that had robbed her of her incredibly unique and instantly recognizable design and made her look physically the same as any other female character in comics ever, they still made her much thinner than she used to be. And now they push the usual "career person is out of touch with their children" trope on her.
Personally, I much preferred Amanda as a terrifying larger-than-life badass that could stare down Batman and was solid and untouchable as a mountain of steel. If they wanted to humanize her, they could have given her some assistant to care for (maybe something like the Administrator and Miss Pauling in TF2), instead of portraying her as a delusional failure of a mom.
Waller is a great character, but an awful person. Just terrible.
On one hand, I have trouble thinking that someone this single-minded would have had kids in the first place. Not that dedicated career people should not be parents, but Waller is a borderline sociopath.
What bothers me about this is not that she has kids or that she has an emotional disconnect with them, but that she cares what they think. Once Amanda Waller decides that something needs to be done, no sentimentality, no emotional outburst is going to change that. This is the woman who only Batman can intimidate.
The Amanda Waller of old would have listened to her daughter's tirade and then had her children locked in a cell so she would know where they were and was sure that they would be safe. If she has you brought in, she's not just going to let you walk out because you throw a fit.
In the Ostrander run from the 80's, one of Waller's daughters had a problem with her husband, a professional football player. So Amanda being the warm human being filled with kindness and rainbows that she is, threatened to move in with them if the of them didn't shape up. They both managed to shut up and do as they were told.
Once Amanda Waller decides that something needs to be done, no sentimentality, no emotional outburst is going to change that. This is the woman who only Batman can intimidate.
Before the Nu52, I kind of saw her as the only woman who could intimidate Batman! :)
I don't hate the angle entirely, but it seems overplayed here. "The Wall" can certainly be a terrifying, larger-than-life badass and also distant from her family, even blindsided by how distant. But in this telling, she seems completely unaware of who she is and what she's become, and that's a long way from the nuanced original character who kept a priest on staff and relied on others to temper her worst impulses, or the thoughtful figure from JLU who not only stood up to Batman but became his frenemy. A Waller worth respecting is a Waller who knows exactly what she's sacrificed and would do it all again.
That's been my consistent problem with nu52 Waller. This one seems to almost revel in being a horrible person at times. Old school Waller had much more defined lines she wouldn't cross and, as you said, purposefully kept people around who could check her worst impulses.
