Mod Post - Free Comic Book Day

Today is, as I hope many of you will have noticed, Free Comic Book Day, the 15th such occassion

We would encourage you to, if you are able, support your local comics shop, many of whom will be holding events to promote the comics, and the comics medium in general.

Personally, I managed to fail pretty much completely, as by the time I got to my LCS they were already entirely out of all the FCBD titles (Which irks me a little as I had been hoping to get the first Miraculous Ladybug comic (As opposed to a photomontage of images from TV episodes), but that's life) They DID have some leftover from last Halloween's giveaway comic day, but it just wasn't the same. :( On the plus side, they did have their first ever actual queue waiting for them to open up this morning, so they were very pleased with that.

A reminder that the normal 1/3 rule does not apply to FCBD releases, but we would ask they not be posted until tomorrow, since we do wish to motivate people to support their comic shop if they can. After tomorrow the comics may be available from websites etc, but

I wish this was a thing in our country. Though we'd first need to get more than two or three actual comic shops. Some preferably outside of the capital.

Okay, well, I might have been exaggerating a little. I think there's one comic shop in the former capital too. It's just mostly that comics are only really sold out of the convenience stores around here. Specialized shops are rare.

Just out of curiosity, what is the former capital of Finland? I thought it had always been Helsinki.

During our independence, yeah, it's always been Helsinki. But under the Swedish rule it used to be Turku.

If someone is able to post the Doctor Who comic for this year, you'll have my ever-lovin' gratitude. It was all gone by the time I was able to hit the FLCS today. :(

This was my LCS' first FCBD - it changed owners at the start of November, and the old owners never did it.

Busiest the shop has ever been, and most people who came in for the free comics wound up buying other comics aswell. The new owner told me towards the end of the day that today alone had been as profitable as a single week under the old owners.

Was at the store today and grabbed a few copies of the free stuff for friends. Bought myself the first trade collection of Snotgirl. Hope its good.

Interestingly, and I swear I'm not making this up, while I was looking at the trades, I heard a little girl talking with her older brother, less than 10 at least, that she "doesn't get Marvel or understand it." I'm not sure what she doesn't get about it, but she was disappointed. Not enough of her favorite heroes are in their own comics? She doesn't understand the stories? Who knows.


Also, saw the recent trade of Saga, volume 7, there. I flipped through it... and immediately put it back. Saga is really taking The Walking Dead approach when it comes to its characters, isn't it? Introduce a lot, but kill tons of others. It has less issues than that series, but I feel incredibly jaded just flipping through it and seeing so many people dead, including the main female lead having a miscarriage. It's just... it's so frequent that it really lacks impact.

It differs from TWD in that it has a good amount of 'up' moments, but I do tend to nly get attached to the main cast, yea.

I got the issues for Star Trek, Legend of Zelda, Miraculous Ladybug, Wonder Woman, Hostage, Guardians of the Galaxy and Valerian. I really wanted the Captain Canuck one but all four shops I went to were out, so if anyone could post it I would greatly appreciate it.

Went to my local comic store. (Berkeley, CA.) Waited in line ~30 minutes to get in, another 10-15 inside to get free comics.

Was in line right in front of That Loud Guy, who was declaring to everyone in earshot that the Stormtrooper costumes were wrong because "Star Wars is not a comic" (several people told him that Star Wars has been several comics; he kept insisting that it didn't start that way) (while discussing loudly with his friend the new Sonic the Hedgehog releases). He also said that the new Cap storyline was "interesting" and a "good dramatic twist" and he'd heard it had some excellent storytelling, so he was looking forward to reading it.

I tried arguing with him; it didn't go badly, but he kept insisting that "it's just a story" and "Hydra is not Nazis" (at one point, he agreed that Hydra was worse than Nazis, but failed to understand why that was a bad thing) and so on. He could "understand why people are offended" but doesn't agree that Marvel did anything wrong - and doesn't think it's going to hurt their bottom line. He and his friend (who was much quieter) seemed to think that all the regular storylines had gotten "boring," so Marvel "had to do something different."

I pointed out that the "something different" could've been "reveal his long-standing love affair with Bucky;" dude claimed that that wouldn't be "thematically appropriate." Dude failed to define "thematically appropriate." A few minutes later, he was telling his friend how awesome the Vision 12-issue series had been, because it was all about "family" and "identity" and "robots as people," so.... I don't think "thematically appropriate" means what he think it does.

Along with the freebies, I picked up Pretty Deadly #1 trade, and a couple of randomly nostalgic issues from their Very Old Very Cheap Used Comics bin.

I found a dickbag online today saying that Secret Empire is finally some interesting storytelling from Marvel, rather than the feminist propaganda of She-Thor.

I tried to make it to my comic shop this afternoon after a yoga class. Sadly, I made it 15 minutes before they were closing and they'd already packed up all the FCBD stuff. So I'm looking forward to the scans. =/

In the meantime, I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last night. Loved it and will probably try seeing it at least one more time before it leaves theaters.

Hot Take! Stan Lee's cameo in GotG2 was the BEST cameo ever and will never be topped.

It was my first time going to a comic shop for FCBD. Line was huge, even though I got here early. I probably spent about 3 hours queueing. I got 3 comics I wanted, though Guardians was already out by the time my turn to pick free comics came.A friend picked it up for me at another location and she'll send it over so that's great. I bought a couple of Funko POPs to support the shop.

I wanted to get the DC Super Hero Girls one but my shop didn't even have this one.

I'll be sure to get there at least 2 hours early next year. And I have a year to think of who to cosplay as.

Is FBCD floppies only now? I'm sure I remember free digital comics in the past too, but I couldn't find anything this year.

On Comixology? I expect most of them will show up there eventually but probably somewhere between a few days and a few months from now.

The days of them putting everything up the day after FCBD are long gone.
