He's a desperately lonely kid who's trying to do anything to earn approval from a murderous jackass who has considered killing him rather than just not picking up the phone once an issue so far. I'm really confused if I'm supposed to think that's funny, that Fury is a mess or something else. Given Ennnis' history on stuff like the Punisher, I'm assuming the first one.
