Okay, I laughed at the "stasis stick" panel. Dark humor written well.

Just because he's black. It doesn't appear the other heroes had seen him with his mask off.

No, he's the first black superhero in an early 1960s team, and his teammates weren't informed, leading to their expressions. He is essentially a stealth hero; he's being introduced without showing his race and the intent is to reveal him AFTER he's proven himself publicly. A specific call-out to Jackie Robinson is made in the previous issue. Basically the idea is to have him prove himself first, not unlike how the Tuskegee Airmen were requested by many bombers as escorts in WWII, even though they were only know as the Red Tails.

When I read this series when it first came out, while I thought it was great, it didn't impact me much emotionally. Re-reading it now. In Trump's America. The casual and overt racism and sexism is like a punch in the gut.
