I don't have a problem with that, per se, it's just... surprising.

I think the idea is they are harkening back to her relationship with the joker when it first started (and it first started in the animated series) to show that yeah, the relationship IS and WAS toxic, but like most relationships it didn't START like that.

I guess that would explain the Carpenter getting paid in pennies. It's oddly harmless for the Joker.

Yeah I think Timm hadn't decided to go that route with Harley until the graphic novel mad love came out and I think that was written by Greg Rucka but I could be wrong. When he read it he liked it because he thought it would've been a natural progression of the characters so he okd it in the cartoon
