Not sure which printing of #16 this is, because in a printing I've come across, not to mention the trade collection, everything Jesse says from "Go find a phone" to "brought up decent" is in red lettering. In other words, he used the Word on her--by far his longest use of it in the comic.

Also, although he hasn't registered it in the heat of the moment, Starr's just undergone his second humiliation in the course of the series: the loss of an ear. Well, that one he brought upon himself.

I guess Ennis probably realized that we have no evidence that the lady wasn't forced or coerced into it and if he possibly using the word on an innocent woman to completely control the course of the next decade or so of her life, which even if she wasn't force to do it would be pretty fucked up.

Also, I don't think losing an ear is a humiliation since he pretty much took it without even fucking blinking. That seems like the exact opposite of humiliating in fact.

Yeah, you're right. Plus, unlike most of the shit that happens to him in the comic, losing an ear in direct armed combat at close range is at least foreseeable, and he, being no dummy, likely realized that.

I've always assumed that Jesse didn't have to. A dude like de Sade who went into the joint for child pornography probably isn't coming back out. Even if he got a much shorter stint than would otherwise be expected, the other inmates would be looking to put him down.
