I wasn't intending on posting anything really regarding Secret Empire. After Civil War II: Enchanted Christmas, I was pretty done with Marvel events. However, there was just one moment from Secret Empire that grabbed my attention, because its a point that I constantly brought up a while back about how Spencer treated two certain characters...

Also, yes, I am in the page limit. 1/3 left over.

Does... does Spencer just really like beating up on Cassie and Scott or something? He loves making one of them a victim and the other a major screw-up who makes things worse. It's so frickin' annoying.

I can buy this. His daughter's life was on the line. If anything, the others look bad for being so hard on him about it, but I guess nerves are understandably frayed at the moment.

I kind of agree. These sort of situations are tough to judge, especially if your kid is in danger.

Agreed, given some of Quicksilver's reactions to siutations involving Luna, you think he'd be a touch more supportive.

Yeah, Scott's betrayal seems pretty reasonable here.

Mostly I'm just annoyed Cassie has been reduced to a hostage in recent years. She used to be an Avenger.

If your child is in danger you'd do absolutely anything to save them. Unless you're John and Patsy Ramsey. Instead you go on CNN!

I was about to say I'm not buying it, but when your team is led by holo Tony I wouldn't have any faith in the good guys either.

I'm still annoyed that they took a competent, experienced, respected hero who was not only an Avenger, but a multiple-time reserve/active member of the Fantastic Four, and turned him into a walking punchline, a loser whose primary defining trait is "ex-con and screw-up." And now they can add "Traitor" to the mix. It's annoying when characters regress like this. Like when Peter Quill went from grizzled veteran to man-child.

100% agree. Just because a story makes sense logically doesn't mean you should write it.

Why kick a character that is already down?

It's especially annoying when the movie made him so much more competent and likeable, than he's been depicted lately. And considering how well it did, you'd think that the comics would follow suit a bit more.

It's almost like the guys don't care about Cassie in her own right as anything more than Scott's daughter.
I mean it's not like she was ever on an Avengers team with Pietro and Hercules, or Tony felt personally responsible for her after Scott died and helped grant her amnesty during the first superhuman Civil War.

Personally, I feel Spencer treats a lot of characters extremely poorly, as shown with pretty much every single person in the scenes above (Sam wouldn't call Scott spineless over something like this). But yeah, he's had a special form of contempt for the Lang family. It's sad really. And it makes this entire scene so generic, along with making the heroes look rather useless.

Personally, I would have loved it if they'd shown Scott had promptly told the other heroes that Cassie had been captured, and they then walk the fine line of keeping things secret against keeping Cassie alive... while elsewhere, we see that Cassie, being an experienced hero, was working on breaking out and kicking ass.

That said, I do love how it's Quicksilver attacking Scott first. Mister 'I would burn the whole world down to protect my sister'.

Like I said above, I can understand Sam's outburst because nerves are frayed at the moment. As far as he knows, they and the entire frickin' resistance might all die in a few minutes because of Scott's betrayal. If he said the same thing even minutes later, after the initial moment, then I'd call shenanigans.

Couldn't he have told the team, so they could do something to try and extract Cassie or something? Or do *just* enough that they thought his intel is legit?

From: [personal profile] scorntx
No, because this is Scott Lang as written by Nick Spencer, who's a complete screw-up and schmuck.

What if that fails and gets her killed? I mean, if there was even a 5% chance of that, most parents wouldn't be willing to take the risk.
