Not sure I understand why Lara looking like a teenager would be a TURN-OFF to someone who, by the standards of his race, IS a teenager. Maybe he's just into older women?

And it's a nitpick, but I like Gold K better when there's no cure at all: it would've given Lara's decision a little more punch.

Also: "You think I'm some CHILD? I'll show YOU! I'm gonna run right out and change my body permanently to show my love, only instead of getting your name tattooed on my thigh I'm going to give up my powers, my functional immortality, the crimefighting career I enjoy, and virtually everything my entire identity is based on! WOULD SOME MERE CHILD DO THAT, I DON'T THINK SO, THIS DECISION IS CLEARLY INFORMED BY FOUR CENTURIES OF WISDOM."

Even so, this is a nice Gift-of-the-Magi twist. The Super and Bat families get to enjoy such long lives that it's refreshing to see that even for them, time can get cut tragically short.

Surprised not to see Booster Gold, though.

Okay, that explains a few things, I guess. I was reading her as a petite teenager because she's got no one near her to give her scale except her alien boyfriend and the usually large Batman. And because, you know, it's much less weird that way.

Byrne's art still has a lot going for it here, but his tendency to draw smaller, squinty eyes when his characters aren't actively wide-eyed in shock works against his efforts to make them look younger. His all-new Superman, back in his heyday, acted and mostly looked like a young newbie, but that face said late 30s-early 40s.

The thing I don't get is why Lara is stuck as a child. I mean, Superman didn't spend four hundred years stuck as Superboy, so why did she? Am I overlooking something here?

I do always have a problem with the 'and you made a decision at just the right time to have the worst possible personal consequences,' things. It's a bit much on the 'the author says your life should suck here' nose.
