Warren Ellis's Wonder Woman

On Thursday/Friday, I finally read Planetary, having read Global Frequency the week before. It's decent, but thank goodness I was able to binge read it, rather than wait 4 years between issues.

I enjoyed the Ellis's micro-takes on other, established characters and the way that their stories were told in their owns style.

Okay, the whole thing about getting the moon too soon seems really silly. I don't really get what that's about.

But I do kinda like the idea of the Amazons being aware of what transpires in the outside world.

The "you need to be ready for a technology" is an old saw, but one that I don't think really applies to space travel- especially as it's basically saying it's only a *hair* too soon, 6 years isn't even a generation!

Yeah that's my point. I mean I know getting to the moon first was like this big deal from a political standpoint and that NASA did advance our technology quite a bit. But actually getting to the moon itself didn't really do anything that caused a massive geopolitical shift, I don't think.

That might be because you've grown up in the world where the West did make it first.

Imagine if the Soviet Union or Communist China had got to the moon first, how that might have altered things in the world quite a bit.

I think the point was that if they go to the moon to early, it isn't to going to stick (probably a hindsight thing that we could have a colony on our moon or something).

The main villains in this series are a pastiche of the Fantastic Four, and their origin story is that they were involved in space race to get to the moon.

They were sound so civilized and enlightened until she decided to show off their superior technology by... popping out a buncha medieval weaponry. How is that better than the phallic rockets?

Yeah, the whole, "Everything substantially longer along one axis than the other two is a penis," thing sometimes gets a little excessive.

Because space vehicles should be proper round UFOs, duh! Clearly the matriarchal society has unlocked the secrets of anti-grav technology and will unveil them to Man's world when they are ready.

...And then she gets merked about ten seconds after takeoff, and the other Amaznots look at each other and go, "maybe that 600-years-ahead thing was a little bit of an overstatement."

Planetary could work as a TV series, either as a straight adaptation or "borrowed." Three super-powered beings attempt to uncover "secret history."

"Are you all superheroes?"
"...We're archeologists."

In my opinion, it would fall way too far into CGI-budget-hell territory. (I'm still miffed about the Iron Throne and the direwolves…)

Ellis basically used this without changing anything as Diana in his Planetary/JLA crossover.
