I mean, I guess it's a throwback, characterization-wise. But Archie is almost as open as Marvel and DC to variant characterizations with all their spin-offs and miniseries.

In this version at least the vitriol is here, but the friendship is completely missing.

Also the art in this doesn’t flow and doesn’t match the characters’ moods.

Yyyyeah, I noticed that too. Given that it has a pretty decent style, it frustrating when the characters lack strong body language and facial expressions for a dialogue driven story.

I'd think it'd be its own continuity, since Riverdale, Gotham and their respective characters aren't normally in the same universe, let alone close enough to have wetlands in common.

Well, sure, but usually these things have some sort of "root" continuity they're based on. Like the Batman/TMNT crossover -- it's not a part of the IDW TMNT canon, but it clearly draws from that incarnation as its source material.

So Archie is the local equivalent of the Man Thing, he's the unwitting guardian of the Nexus of All Realities on Earth-Riverdale,

"What knows fear BURNS at the touch of the Archie Andrews...." might explains some of his dating issues.
