Best Usagi Yojimbo horror stories
Oct. 31st, 2017 12:53 amToday being Halloween and all, I have decided to post a page each from some Usagi Yojimbo horror stories I consider to be among the best in the comic's 30+ year run. My favourite is, of course, "A Promise in the Snow", which I've already posted here. And let's not forget "Yokai", whose theme is the hyakki yako, or "the night parade of a hundred demons". There are, however, other very good stories after the cut.
I have decided to not include Jei stories because, although he is a supernatural-themed villain, he has a different function in the Usagiverse, serving more as the main antagonist.
Usagi Yojimbo (v.1) #25: "The Bridge" (1990)

Usagi arrives at a village where a demon is haunting its main bridge, and decides to investigate the mystery and face the monster.

Usagi Yojimbo (v.1) #33: "Broken Ritual" (1992).

Based on an idea by Sergio Aragonés of MAD fame, Usagi helps the tormented ghost of a general to find its final rest. One of the best written, if not the best, early Usagi story.

Usagi Yojimbo (v.3) #31: " The Inn on Moon Shadow Hill" (1999)

Usagi stays at a haunted inn and accepts a wager to enter the local graveyard - and picks up a few surprises along the way.

Usagi Yojimbo (v.3) #117-119: "Traitors of the Earth" (2009)

A possessed Kitsuné, Usagi and Kiyoko fighting zombies with swords, a powerful evil wizard, and Sasuké the Demon-Queller? What's not to like? :)

Usagi Yojimbo (v.3) #128: "Teru Teru Bozu" (2010)

A lighthearted story suddenly takes a turn for the worse and ends with a punch to your gut (weird cover's got nothing to do with it).

Any stories you remember or want to discuss, feel free to in the comments!

A Promise in the Snow - did a post on it. Ending gives me a lump in my throat every time.
The Guardian - that's the colour one with the bridge, isn't it?
One Dark and Stormy Night - it has been posted here as well, but the images were lost. It's a very solid tale.
