Fun fact. I first saw that cover on my mobile and the image was so small that my first impression was that Wanda was kissing rogue (because of the white hair)
HANK: "He's all mine now, Wanda. Just him, me, his post-breakup wangst, a trunkful of finest chianti and a private penthouse in Westchester. My undying thanks."
You know, I get that some writers are too attached to Rogue's signature accent to let it go, but when other writers, including ones writing books headlining her, don't use it, it just comes off as really inconsistent.
An accent can be a tough thing to write. I remember years ago when Byrne left Alpha Flight the writer who took over (And utterly ruined the series imo) couldn't write Puck to save his life:
"Do not worry, Heather, I will not let anything happen to you. Eh?"
Just...throwing an "eh" at the end like that automatically makes it Canadian. You really missed the cadence Byrne gave him. And speaking of Byrne the guy couldn't write the Demon's rhymes to save his life when he was writing his team up with Superman in Action Comics.
Oh God, you reminded me of Jericho Drumm in Bendis' New Avengers, where he was written with Miss Cleo's accent for the first couple of issues and it was almost impossible to decipher.
I'll admit I'm not familiar with the character's original Strange Tales appearances and manner of speech, but as of his first guest appearance in Dr. Strange's book back in the 80s he spoke refined, perfectly intelligible American English. As one would expect of someone who spent more than a decade in US schools, eventually earning his doctorate in Psychiatry.
I'd always imagined that Jericho's Haitian origin would be apparent in his accent if one were actually hearing him speak. But that's a far cry from writing his dialog as pidgin English.
Very true in regards to the use and misuse of accents. I remember how Power Man used to be written decades back and now his dialogue is pretty straightforward and in my opinion kind of bland.
Rogue was infected with M-Pox and so was Sunspot. So there were treatments and it wasn't always a death sentence. But not every mutant has access to Avengers or AIM resources.
I'm glad that Julian isn't just written as a mopey emo kid or angry wannabe Magneto. But I feel like him happily cleaning bedpans is really off for him. He was angry at the Inhumans, he was dying and he tried to destroy Attilan as his final act. That shouldn't go away just because they helped him. He's always cared about how other mutants are treated, and a lot of mutants died because of they dug in their heels and waited until the last second to finally destroy the cloud.
You know, seeing Voyager in the background there makes me think that I wouldn't mind her existence so much if it turned out that the retcon was part of some sort of insidious plot that certain people could see through, much like Dawn's existence in the Buffy The Vampire Series. But sadly I think it's just another retcon like the aforementioned Blue Marvel and Sentry. I can almost predict her power set are going to be much like Superman's.
There's clearly meant to be something up with Voyager, to the point where Nadia almost saw through it on the spot during the Marvel Legacy one-shot. She's a Dawn, not a Sentry.
The art on these last few issues has been solid as hell. I hope this Sean Iztaaske guy sticks around for future books. Rogue in a suit might be top-ten all time looks for her.

Date: 2018-01-14 02:34 pm (UTC)On the one hand, writing people with an accent phonetically can come across as dismissive/belittling, etc.
OTOH; writing everyone speaking the "standard" can end up erasing real differences in manners of speech (be it from class, ethnicity, or just dialect)
And to further confuse matters different groups often have different baggage with regards to how their accents are portrayed.
