I don't know how anyone could read this arc and not fall in love with Scott Summers. Utopia might be one of the hands down greatest run of X-men comics ever.
Logged in at work to say exactly the same thing! This arc shows him as the master tactician and thinker he should always be depicted as... one step ahead of the game, and masterfully so.
This era of X-Men really represented, at least to me, how the series could and should have evolved post-Claremont, post-Lobdell, post-Morrison and post-Whedon. Yes, even post M-Day. Utopia was a good idea, the move to San Francisco was a good idea, "Messiah Complex" was a strong crossover, losing Charles Xavier was a good idea, Scott and Emma had a well-written love story and dynamic (their Savage Land holiday remains one of my favourite single issues), having Scott and Logan demonstrably on the same page was a good idea...
... and then "Schism" came along and borked the whole thing because Civil War had done *so* well for Marvel. Sigh.
My X-collection actually stops with the final issue pre-"Schism" with all the Breakworld stuff resolved. Because what came after was, for me, just ugh.
Yeah, this really was a great concept to explore, and I'm sorry they screwed it all up and completely wrecked Scott and Emma along the way.
I still love Cyclops with a jetpack. And the amazing bit where the Juggernaut is advancing on San Francisco, and Scott keeps pulling plans out of his ass as he mix-and-matches mutant powers. (Siryn+Dazzler, for instance.)
Like, the pages where rioters (who, frankly, DO have a solid reason for freaking the fuck out here. Mandatory sterilization of minorities, are you fucking kidding me?) are shot in the back and the face from the authorities. Thonged asshots, boob-first poses, and faces that look like they are giving blowjobs.
For the most part I've become desensitized to this kind of thing. But when THE focal point of THE shocking panel with THE game-changing attack that hits a protester in the back is her ass, it takes the drama out of the plot.

Poor Scott.

"Don't you mean Plan B?"
"That would imply I only have 26 plans."
