So I recently got around to something I'd wanted to do for almost two decades... and that's watch the 2009-2010 Sailor Moon Musical "Vampire Trilogy," three installments (technically four but one of them is non-canon to the rest) of the long running Sailor Moon Stage Musical series that had a continuing plot, and forms an almost Wagnerian epic. I really got a kick out of the amount of world building that was tossed into something as seemingly superficial as the SM Musicals (not knocking them, I've been a fan for 18 years).

Anyway I thought it'd be fun to look at the time that Sailor Moon went up against a Vampire in the Manga... (and maybe look at some clips from the musical too).

1/3rd of a Manga chapter and 3 short clips below which are much less than 1/3rd of their respective media.

Specifically Korean BBQ

I love this manga, and I love the way it was animated into a special for the anime.

In the Musical Garlic is ineffective (so are stakes, mirrors, crosses... and certainly not Milk... Usagi). The only one who can truly destroy the Vampires is Dacul's half human daughter, Vampir.

Of course Vampires are only the tip of the iceberg, in this saga there's old gods and demons like Astarte, and Lilith... and a shattered planet which is quite angry.

It does seem kinda odd singing about smashing the patriarchal gods, in a universe where all the power players are women, and Sailor Moon is the Messiah who will rule over a future Millennial Kingdom.

Anyway whouda thought Sailor Moon and Vampires would be such a fun fit?

The one that always stayed with me was the life-force vampire that Sailor Uranus and Neptune face in a special.

Haruka/Uranus is near death and the baddie says that if Michiru/Neptune shatters the bottle he's using as a focus, which she thinks will save Uranus, it will instead end all life on Earth.

Michiru says he's bluffing,, he says she can't prove he is... Standoff time, right?

....or not, as Michiru instantly shatters the bottle,

The baddie looks appalled! "How did you know I was bluffing?" he asks as his power fades and Haruka is restored.

Michiru's answer is one of the most terrifying examples of love I can recall.

"I didn't know you were bluffing... but a world without Haruka in it wouldn't be worth saving."

And you know she means that with absolute sincerity!
