Carol has issues, we all know that. But she has SERIOUS issues if we're going from "I want to be worthy of Mar-Vell's power and code name" to "I want everyone to love me."
Wasn't that her motivation during the Reed run of Ms. Marvel?
She had been the most popular hero in the world in the House of M reality, she had gotten a taste of it, and she wanted it again. Flash forward a few years and she got it after CW2.
House of M simply showed her her potential. It was a matter of being the best version of herself, and living up to her potential.
The popularity and image aspects simply served as a tool to see how much she can inspire people, like mar-vell inspired her, or how Cap being beloved meant he could basically bring everyone together for the ideal he represents.
It's basically said in the first issue that she wasn't looking to win a popularity poll, but she wanted to be a better hero and do more good than just sitting behind a desk. There's multiple references in the book to this, like when she fights her evil warbird version who she felt wasted her talents and let her earth get blown up. Or during initiative where she said she wanted to make a difference. Heck the conclusion of the book is basically her going she wanted to be the best hero..... but there's no way to truly measure that or rating for it, so she was just going to be the best version of herself
Yeah, I think Carol is more about trying to be the absolute best and fearing she's not going to protect people, not so much "everybody hated me" (yeah, I remember House of M. -- Do I want to remember House of M -- ).
I have to admit I enjoy Carol most as a cosmic character. I really really liked that Ewing Ultimates/Ultimates2 book.
I don't quite get something here- it's 'I put Tony in a coma' Carol asking 'I took the hit,' Carol if it was worth it? What'd that Carol 'get' from it?
I haven't read the issue, but I can think of a few things that went down after CW2 that could've gone better with Tony around. For one he might have picked up on Hydra Cap's lies soon enough to stop him from taking over the US, and thus prevented Secret Empire.
Wow, Marvel seems to really be rushing to undo nearly two decades of awful behavior in time for the movie.
I wonder what's next. Handwaving away arresting non-powered retired heroes so they could be held without trial for violating the SUPERHUMAN Registration Act in the first Civil War? Rationalizing the way she endangered her teammates by hiding her alcoholism and power fluctuations in Busiek's Avengers run?
I'm okay with having a few "heroes" who are terrible people. I just need other people to call them on it. This is why Guy is a better GL than Hal and why I prefer Archer to Bond.
