Famed author Harlan Ellison passed away today. In his memory I'm posting an issue of Detective Comics he wrote.

Well, this was certainly a... unique voice for Batman.

I'd love to see someone post Daredevil #208, where Harlan has DD fight to survive a house of death traps engineered by an deceased old foe's angry mother.

I got Ben Grimm a couple times, but never quite Bruce Wayne.

That one was a good showcase of action & art, but IMO, Arthur Cover's follow-up to it was way funnier.

"A unique voice" is pretty much a definition of Harlan Ellison's entire life, and the world was much the richer for it.

I actually like the interpretations of Batman where he's not doing it just because "MY PARENTS ARE DEAAAAD", but because he genuinely enjoys being Batman and has fun with it.

Also, with a special guest appearance by Crusher Creel, who I guess is just in town on vacation and decided not to get in a fight with Batman because it might mess up his vacation with Titana.

Well, prior to The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, this was closer to the standard Batman. He BECAME Batman because of his parents, but he didn't continue that way forever.

I mean, this is basically Harlan Ellison writing an extended joke sequence, but it's not completely off-model for the Batman of the time.

Sigh I can't say I was expecting this news....

The story is funny though.

I love this story so much. Especially that Batman is allowed to have real, human emotions and annoyances and all.

This would have been AWESOME as a BTAS episode!

This could definitely have been a B:TAS episode. Bats has the same kind of general "dedicated, but approachable" demeanor of pre-retool Bruce.

The other thing I love about this? The reaction of the average citizen to seeing Batman like they're seeing the neighborhood beat cop or the postman.
