It's a bit 'eh' to me so far but my worst fear was that as soon as Bendis left they were going to full hog with MCU synergy and change everything to fit the show so I'm glad that hasn't happened yet.
That and the "two issues in one" that this title is doing is a mistake IMO. Already they ruined what would have been a very effective cliffhanger to end on (Jessica being shot point blank in the head) only to have her come out ok in two pages.
Glad to see that Jessica Jones is going to stick around as a going concern without Bendis, rather than her weird hands-off status while Bendis was doing other stuff at Marvel. I quite like Kelly Thompson too so I'm excited that she's writing this.
Not sure about a digital series. I mean, sure Jessica Jones may be a big seller digitally, but so far Marvel's digital stuff has felt distinctly secondary.
Minor thing, but it's weird seeing Doctor Strange with some grey in his hair.
It wasn’t a hands off status, she was never that popular a character and no one really bothered to do anything with her besides being Luke’s wife. Tons of writers have used Miles so it’s not like Bendis had a hold on his characters.
Jessica Jones might never have been Spider-Man, sure, but Alias was popular and well regarded enough that it was a critical darling for years and later got adapted for TV. She wasn't exactly a forgotten D-list scrub on the level of Sleepwalker.
I don't think it's so much that no one was bothered to or inclined to do anything substantial with the character for years as it is that with the hands off policy they weren't allowed to. I'm fairly certain that in the lead up to the recent Bendis series one of the Marvel guys (I wanna say Tom Brevoort talking to CBR, but it's difficult finding the exact article) straight up said that they'd been waiting for Bendis to write her again.
Alias was critically acclaimed but it was an adults only title and not a huge success. Even The Pulse which was intended to be more ‘general reader friendly’ got very little buzz. Even Bendis has said she didn’t really become ‘popular’ until the Netflix show.
Marvel might have wanted Bendis to do the JJ title which is their perogative but Bendis has said on his tumblr that he’s hands off when it comes to his characters and doesn’t take issue with ‘sharing’. Other writers have had Jessica show up; she appeared in Young Avengers for an arc, she’s been in titles where Luke is.
But at the end of the day she’s not a character that everyone was clamoring to use. I think a prime example is that when Bendis left Daredevil he had Jessica working for him. As soon as Brubaker took over he put her on a bus and replaced her with his own ‘pet character’ Dakota North.

Gotta appreciate Jessica's commitment to her lipstick here. I really like the shading/lighting on the art.
