"Characters that shouldn’t be together in the same book are. I don’t know why that delights me so much. Its like you can run amok in this literary neighborhood and pull down all the picket fences between people’s stories. So that you could have the Frankenstein monster turn up in the middle of Little Women. If that’s what you fancy." - Alan Moore

You know, I never really realized when I first read these books, but Moore's treatment of Murray is really weird. I get that she is this unflappable leader character there, but he really does seem to go out of his way to humiliate her in the stories without giving her a moment of triumph to balance things out.

Yeah, and it's really offputting.

I think this is part of the reason I like the vampirized version in the film... she had a lot more agency... and moments of triumph....

I accept that Moore should be considered one of the best if not the best comic book writers ever, but after reading a lot of his worth I think there're some issues he has with women that sneaks into his work in uncomfortable ways.

I find it odd how messed up Mina is by this. She's been through BY worse. I'm not saying she should be unaffected by this but this ...gah. She doesn't even struggle or fight back. Just gets right to groveling.

Mina honey- you've faced Dracula, you can take a naked invisible punk.

From the "He made me grovel" line, I'm guessing even Dracula didn't humiliate Mina to such a degree.

I think it's also worth noting that Mina still has PTSD from her time with Dracula. It's clear that even 70-some years later, she still bears those scars and fears. Suddenly having an invisible man attack her and rob her of her freedom and safety so quickly? I mean, she does try to fight back here, but she's not a martial artist and she's fighting an invisible sociopath rapist who caught her unprepared for his assault.

I don't think it's so much that Griffin did the damage, as much as he ripped open a wound that was already there.

I'm only viewing these posts, never read the series, so I have to ask: was there an essential reason to take a psychopathic unstable rapist into the team?

Same reason as Hyde and even Nemo, really: Bond reckoned them to have abilities no one else did, to be ruthless, and to be controllable. He was more or less right on all three counts for all three "gentlemen" until the Martian landings.
