NS: We have our Kate Kane/Batwoman for the small screen

Variety has announced that actor Ruby Rose has been cast as Kate Kane, aka Batwoman

NBC confirms that she will be introduced in this years CW hero crossover event. and is planned to get her own spin off series (That's more than The Ray managed)

Ruby Rose is a genderfluid (she prefers feminine pronouns), out lesbian, who is perhaps best known for her role "Orange is the New Black" and is about to be in "The Meg".

OitNB is not a show I follow, so I have little idea as to her as an actress. Anyone more familiar want to comment?.

I've only seen her on an episode of Dark Matter several years ago. Let's just say I hope she's spent a lot of time working on improving her acting skills since then.

Edit: She did, in fact. And based on some clips I YouTubed, other androids on that show acted similarly stilted and awkward, so that was almost certainly intentional. Not seeing the problem.

Same in Orange, really... she stuck out like a very sore thumb (IMO), and that's above and over the show's overall descent by then. Can't see her doing BW or the CWverse any service.

I lost interest in Orange is the New Black after the first season. I think I will see the Meg that looks like a fun movie.

I want to see a lot of people campaigning to keep Kate Jewish, on another note. Which of course they should, but I was wondering just that in reaction to anything the studio has said about changing that, or was that all pre-emptive?

I’m not sure, but I believe it has its roots in the casting call, which specified that they wanted women of any race to play her.

I like her a lot, but none of the roles I've seen her in so far have involved much 'heavy lifting' in terms of acting. The impression i get from OitNB is she's basically playing herself, cool alternative lesbian with badass tattoos. It's hard to say if she'll bring much nuance to Kate.

I thought she did well in the scene where Piper frames Stella.

She was in John Wick 2, playing the dragon of the main villain. Did okay with the part, she "spoke" in what I would guess was American Sign Language. Put up a decent enough fight against Wick all things considered.

Curious if she can pull off a convincing and consistent American accent (Rose is Australian).

Hope she does well in the part.

Ares is the role that convinced me to add her to my list of fancasts way back when a live-action Batwoman was still a dream. Acting only through body language and expressions is not easy, and she pulled it off along with the stuntwork.

I actually thought she looked pretty badass in John Wick. Not sure if she can lead but when it comes to the physical aspects of the character it sounds like she can more than hold her own.

I wonder how they are going to explain Batwoman in a world with no Batman, though...

Batman does exist on whatever Earth she'll be on. That was confirmed in the CW's TCA segment on Monday.

There's been mentions of a Bruce Wayne in the Arrow world, and mentions of Superman's brooding Gotham friend in the Supergirl world. Make what you will of either of that.

The best way I can describe OITNB is... I can see where the praise come from and why people like it and it is a well done show...... I could not endure even 5 minutes of it.

She wasn't my first and maybe not even my tenth choice, but I'm happy with this. She has the right sort of look and gives off the right attitude, and has a good amount of fighting and stunt experience already. And I don't mind her acting, despite most of the Internet pretty much claiming it's the worst thing ever. But that's online hyperbole for you.

I'm worried about her ability to do an American accent, but this is a thumbs-up from me. Though it does suck that one actress who I and a lot of others thought was the front-runner (Ashley Platz) won't get it now.

I liked RR well enough in OitNB, but not sure that'll make her a good Kate. Never seen anything else she was in, though I intend to see John Wick 2 (the first one was surprisingly good).

Still, I'm willing to give her a chance. And hey, maybe this means Kate'll be tattooed again in the comics. >_> (I can't tell you how much I hate that her ink was retconned...)

They weren't retconned, just forgotten. Fernando Blanco, her most recent main artist, actually corrected me on this on Twitter; he drew her tattoos in his thumbnails, but they were forgotten in the time crunch. I expect similar was true for the other times, as well.

It's been about 2 years since she was shown having them...good on Blanco for trying to put them back, but even if it was also initially a mistake on Barrows/Ferriera's part (the first art team to draw her without them), I think it can safely be called a retcon, as that's plenty of time for someone to say something and get it fixed if the editorial intent was for her to still have them.

It's not a retcon. I have it on Blanco's word that her tattoos will be in issue #18.

Over the span of 2 years, at least 4 different art teams (across Detective and Batwoman) drew her consistently uninked, without it being corrected, and only the most recent Batwoman artist saying it was a mistake, on HIS part, not any of the previous teams. That is a retcon, by definition. Maybe one that began accidentally, but the idea that at least 7 artists, plus at least 4 editors, just didn't notice for 2 whole years beggars the imagination.

It was either their will to remove the tattoos, or they lacked of will to fix the mistake, or even, before Blanco, admit to it - both of which are methods of retcon.

Look. Franco intended to put the tattoos back. That's great. If you think I'm accusing him of lying, I am not. I fully believe he intended to do it, and that next issue will bear the fruits of that intent. So rein in the personal insults, please. But he is only speaking for himself.

And that's the thing - Franco's not the one who stopped drawing them. That was the Barrows/Ferriera team on Detective, 2 years ago. Might that have been an accident? Possibly initially. But that's not where it stopped. The artists who followed Barrows/Ferriera on Detective followed their lead. The artists who preceded Franco on Batwoman did, as well. At no point in that period did any of those artists, nor any of the editors they were working under, say that this was just an ongoing mistake.

For 2 years, no ink.

That's a retcon. Possibly a passive 'it's no big deal, no point in fixing it' one, but a retcon nonetheless.

That said, you're still not making sense to me. Mistakes do not equal retcons. Even long-term ones. They're just mistakes.

I know that the first TPB of the current series did partially add them back, so this is just a matter of sloppiness/lack of time. I don't see a point in assigning intent to it. I mean... if they really wanted them gone or just didn't want to fix them, why would they attempt that fix? Why would they bother bringing them back next issue?

For what it's worth, at least three of Kate's main writers (Rucka, Williams, and Tynion) have all expressed support for this choice.

Back in 2015 Ruby Rose tweeted about how she'd slept with Demi Lovato two years before. At the time the singer was not public about her sexuality and Rose took the decision out of her hands. (She also denied she had slept with Ruby Rose, but it was already tabloid fodder by then anyway).

Well... yeah, that's not great. But at the same time, it seems they've made amends from that from what I can glean off Google, and if so... I don't see much reason to care too much, y'know?

The fact they've made up is nice, but doesn't excuse the initial behaviour.

Outing someone against their will is a very nasty move to make.
