New X-event and an unpleasantly lingering aftereffect of "Hunt for Wolverine"

So it's been announced that the next X-event will be called, with apparent complete lack of irony. and just after Bendis has left them







It's a ten part weekly series running in Uncanny X-Men from November into 2019 and will feature a slew of creators

The revived Uncanny X-Men will kick off with the X-Men: Disassembled story, which, according to a press release, “brings together nearly every mutant left on earth in a story that threatens to destroy them.” The arc will be “an epic tale of mystery and tragic disappearance, with an adventure so earth-shattering, it could very well be the X-Men’s final mission.” The press release goes on to tease that not all the mutants who appear in the arc will make it out alive for Uncanny X-Men proper.


Nice to see some old faces we haven't seen in an X-book for quite a while; Surge, Firestar, and Dust in particular. but.... oh dear.... check over on the right hand side and we can see another familiar (kinda) face...




Sigh.... so despite the fact that he made it into the poster for the event, they're using the "unshaven hobo" look for Cypher.  A look he only had  in "Hunt for Wolverine: Weapon Lost" ((and not even on the covers).

M'boy Doug is looking much more like himself in his introduction as a Daredevil regular (which I can't post yet as twe've already had four pages posted from that issue, but is quite cute). Oh well....

And Sabretooth is leading Weapon X-Force, but they're loosely affiliated with the X-men at best.

I absolutely love that they put Jean Grey, a character that pretty much embodies the needless resurrection argument, in the center of this image while also saying people are going to die.

Also I just keep wistfully looking in to the horizon while waiting for Cyclops return while knowing it makes my standard here very questionable.

It's nice seeing Northstar, Husk, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magma, Sunfire, Firestar, Shatterstar, and the New X-men kids all on the cover for Uncanny X-men.
But this highlights just how many X-characters have been ignored and put in limbo while a lot of these same writers have been focusing on "classic" X-men characters. Hopefully they get to do more in this story than die or be pathetic, needing the A-Listers to bail them out.

I'm not trying to have a go, but is you wanting Doug frozen in Amber as a twink (which you have described him as before) less reductive than people who want Psylocke to remain a 'sexy' ninja in a bathing suit or people wanting Barry Allen as The Flash forever (for two examples)?

On the one hand I want to say "So what if it is? We all have our favourites." :)

On the other hand, it's a fair question. Change in a character is a perfectly reasonable thing and in general I don't think I have a problem with it (well, no more than most), but I want it to have some sort of reasonable basis in the character's personality.

Nothing about any appearance that Doug has made in the last five plus years, prior to this Weapon Lost mini had Doug as anything other than his usual "guy next door (with great hair)" self. A guy somewhere in his late teens early twenties (The usual vague age range for the original New Mutants, in his case possibly altered by being dead since the mid 80's but let's not go there) and even the immmediate follow up to this in Dardevil has short haired, clean shaven, ordinary looking Doug again.

So I think it's the fact they used the aberrant look (which was supposed to be because he was having a breakdown after trying to "translate the internet, all of it" and was no longer taking any care of himself physically) which just seems an annoying choice to make on one for my favourite characters.

YMMV of course.

Gonna get shit for this but....Asian Betsy is THE Psylocke. Its what I've always known her as (yes yes I only found out later about the body swap)

On the bright side, I see the real Madrox (complete with tattoo) is alive though I can't help but notice Layla is missing.

Why did they let Bishop back in again? Is attempting to murder a baby no longer a crime? I mean, Gambit was banished for years and he was just an accessory to Sinister's Morlock Massacre.

Bishop got his memories erased. And as we all know, if you don't remember doing something, even if everyone else does, well, it never happened.
(Then he got the memories back, and felt guilty about the whole "committed mass genocide to kill one annoying teenager". As you do.)

I think Magneto used it first, back in x-Men 200, when his lawyer successfully argued that any crimes committed since he had been de-aged to babyhood and then re-aged (long story), should not count against him since he was ostensibly a new person.

Law school in the MU must be SO much fun! :)

I am vaguely annoyed at them using "dissassembled" for an X-men event.

Like, for the Avengers event it works because their battlecry is "Avengers Assemble!" doing it for the X-men doesen't count.

I mean, I guess they've run out of X-puns like "Xterminate" or "Xtinction" or such, but still, "dissassembled" works for Avengers, but not for X-men.

A couple issues ago (Astonishing X-Men # 13) Banshee had a last-page reveal. A footnote in # 14 said, "Banshee has been in a coma since being resurrected by Apocalypse's "Death Seed" - see Uncanny Avengers Vol. 1 #23!"
He looks like a aged body; he hasn't spoken, but seems to understand what's going on and has used his powers in battle both issues.
