Uncanny X-Men line up revealed

So we have at least one person from nearly all the various generations of X-Men

O5 - Jean, Beast, Iceman (I assume it's older Bobby)
All New - Storm, Nightcrawler
New Mutants - Cannonball
Australia team - Psylocke (and we ARE getting Caucasian Betsy back)
90's era - Bishop
Generation X - Jubilee
New-X Men - Wolverine (I still can't quite bring myself to call her X-23 again)

Now whether this is the final line up, or just for the start of the Dissassembled arc or something else I don't know.

Thoughts? Opinions?

After 28 years IS a bit late to say the least, but I do think it's better it's dealt with than not.

It may be odd to reverse it after so long, but seeing as how it's rooted in some stuff that is anywhere from confusing to straight up problematic, its erasure is really for the best. Regardless of the original intent of the change, reversing it falls in the 'better late than never' category.

Well yea.....but at this point she's surely been Asian for longer now. And arguably more popular with this character template. It's also interesting to note that in other media she tends to be Asian by default.

It is rather infuriating that they never really did anything to explore the ramifications that having a changed race might involve. And by going Caucasian to East Asian they avoided a lot of the baggage of the typical "black like me" trope. That could really be interesting both in character terms and in exploring the various issues surrounding racism and racial identity.

Meh. They won't interact much, if at all, on a personal level, so I don't really care what the lineup is.
They're going to have a few frantic, action-filled stories, full of sound and fury. Then they are going to fold in favour of a new number 1 issue.

The art is somewhat weird and Jean's costume looks REALLY REALLY 90's.

Also not sold on Kurt's beard. (though Nocturne's dad had a beard so...)

Jubilee looks pretty cool though.

I don't understand how Kurt's beard works. If he has a full beard now then that means he was shaving before but isn't his whole body covered in fur? Has he been trimming EVERYTHING? His personal grooming regimen must take forever.

As I understand it, hie entire skin is covered with short, blue, velvet like fur, perhaps closer to down than fur. His other body hair (normal, coarser and black) grows, as normal, through the down, which is why he has a head of hair, and can grow a beard.

So yes, Kurt shaves, because he has normal hair growth across his lower face. I suspect he trims rather than shaves because he trims the longer dark hair to same length as the down.

It I wanted to handwave for effect, I'd say the bodyhair is fairly light in colour until it's exposed to sunglight for any length of time at which point it darknes to black, so his five o'clock shadow is not normally visible because it's pale and blends in with the blue velvet, but after a few days more, his stubble becomes noticeably darker.

Does he look good in it?

I'm also not sold. This looks like a lot like wino-Kurt. I much prefer swashbuckling Kurt. More Errol Flynn (minus the fascism), less Joshamee Gibbs.

See but why even do that? Surely you'd just make her Asian from the jump?

Probably because the character's back story if she appears on screen would make for very bad press when folks bring up the comic back story.

Plus they might want to use Otherworld and her brother at some point in the movies and I can't see Marvel being brave enough to have an Asian Captain Brittain no matter how timely or interesting it could be.

So easier to reverse the comic body swap and let some time pass before they bring her into the MCU.

I'm aware of her casting in the x-films but she's divorced from her comic roots there. No siblings, no connection to a mystical dimension and the x-films while having their own controversies haven't queit reached the level of race fail the MCU has so if she ever appears there with an adatpation of her comic backstory the whole white woman turned Asian is far more likely to cause controversy.

Gotta' say, this is a really spectacular lineup. It's half guys and girls, which is something I don't think I've seen in a really long time. Also, big fan of most of the characters here, as they're either from Astonishing or Red or elsewhere.

Quick question, does anyone hope we might get some new relationships in this book between characters in the lineup or elsewhere?

Personally, I always holding out for them to bring back the short-lived Hank/Jean relationship. Wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't happen, but still hopeful.

My only concern is that there are a LOT of leaders in that group; Jean, Storm, Sam and Kurt are all experienced team leaders. I would be kind of hoping Sam would be allowed to shine there, as he tends to get sidelined the way he tends to be on any X-Team that isn't X-Force/New Mutants, but I suspect that won't be the case.

It's also more than slightly odd that of that line up, it's the youngest who have parental responsibility. Sam has Joshie, Jubilee has Shogo and Laura has Gabby. Whereas with the exception of Jean looking after Cable during his formative years, kinda) Bishop, Betsy, Storm, Hank and Bobby, not a kid between them AFAIK.

So Emma doesn't get to be an X-Man anymore but Bishop ("I was a violent paramilitary thug who tried to shoot Gambit in the face based on no real evidence, then later I tried to shoot a baby in the face and then tracked her through all time to keep trying to shoot her in the face!") and Beast ("My arrogance and hubris almost destroyed space time, I was part of the Illuminati, and I will always be a judgemental prick, 'cept when I've got my Avengers membership card!") are cool? That's nonsense.

Not when the top arguments I've seen for wanting to keep the body are:

a) She's so interesting as a sexy Asian ninja (outside of Uncanny X-Force, or Claremont's resurrection story, what has Psylocke done interestingly outside of her initial bodyswap story?)
b) This is what I've grown up with (it didnt save Emma Frost as a hero, it didn't save the Spider-Mariage, it's not going to save this)
c) But representation! (This has been covered.)
