At least it wasn't Barbara. That would've been over the top offensive. This way its only mildly offensive, since its her best friend who replaces her. Good job DC, now either retire that character or get her fucking right. I'm sick of not having enough minority heroes or seeing them shoved to the side or screwed over with.
oh no . . . is Babs walking now? (I feel bad for being angry that someone is out of a wheel chair, but I don't think that DC should have done that . . .)
so, is there a reason yet why Cass isn't batgirl anymore? Steph should be pretty good, but I'm just curious as to what reason the writers gave for Cass quitting
I have a comment I really want to post, but I now know DC will take it as a challenge. Look at what happens when you say "DC, I'm not sure how you could get more offensive by having an Asian woman become the most trite clichéd Dragon Lady."
I love Steph, but I love Cass so much more, and she was 100% perfect. Whatever.
I'm kind of excited about this. Mostly for two reasons: 1) I think it would piss off Bruce and Tim. 2) I never liked Cass following Bruce. Hopefully, Cass will find her own way without Bruce's influence now.
I also like the Spider-Man/Blue Beetle/Static vibe I'm getting from Steph in Batgirl.
This. I like the theory that both Cass and Steph are Batgirl. We know Steph is Batgirl now, but what we don't know is if Cass is ~also~ Batgirl. *crosses fingers and hopes*
I'm mostly just relieved that DC isn't relieving themselves of the best (only good) example of a disabled character in superhero comics whose superpower isn't not being disabled anymore. (Wellll, I guess there's Xavier, but he's in and out of the chair all the time.) There would have been absolutely no way to do that story that would not have come across as "Look how awesome Barbara is now that she isn't in a wheelchair!"
As for Steph, now she just needs to get in either a Nightwing or a Batman costume and she'll be tied with Jason (since he's never been Batgirl). Each will be one away from the full set!
You need to have at least one comic image in your post, as per the posting guidelines (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/profile#POSTING%20GUIDELINES).
Apart from the decision that they were just going to do something new for its own sake (which happens often enough; OYL, for example), I suspect Cassandra got done in by being considered to out-there as a character.
That is, she's a quasi-mute (since she can speak now, but she's pretty taciturn still, when written well) former assassin trained since birth for the job. I'm guessing that when Didio and co. were evaluating what they want Batgirl to be, they hit on "normal American teenage girl", something Stephanie is a lot closer to.
I don't know about that. They had a "normal teenage girl" (more normal than Supergirl or Wonder Girl even) in Mary Marvel and look what they did to her. Sex her up and make her crazy and evil. Also if it wasn't for Chuck Dixon Steph would still be dead. They probably just thought that Cass (thanks to OYL Dragon Lady) was radioactive and said "they, what about the former Robin's girlfriend who was also the female Robin. We're not doing anything with her" or something like that.
I'm torn here. I think Cass is more appealing as a Batgirl but I love Steph, so if there's a chance of seeing her regularly, I'm pleased. I would be more attracted to a Spoiler series, but there's plenty of reasons for this move. Argh. Torn.
In other words, the three female sidekicks of DC's Big 3 - Wonder Girl, Supergirl, and Batgirl are now all white blond teenagers.
Wow, DC is so diverse. It's almost like an episode of Friends. Way to go, Dan Didio!
But who can blame them - it's not like they had a bi-racial Eurasian mute ninja who's already shown she can headline her own series to fill the role and all. Right? *crickets chirping* Anyone?
I'm sad to lose Cass in the role, but at least there's no immediate indication that she's going away entirely. And I'm happy to see her giving it up on her own terms rather than someone else's.
And I really did enjoy this issue, quite a lot more than I thought I would. Provided they don't screw her up, I think Steph has the potential to be quite awesome.
WOW! I pulled a Dramatic Gopher. But still how does this get by? I mean, I learned in creative writing class, once you become a professional in litercary (or at least "real" novels) you can easily predict the ending or twist in the story by the clues in the laid in the story, Like who REALLY was working for Voldermort in Sorcerer's Stone. I mean, did anyone really predicted it was really that General kid that was posing as the Red Robin?
It's completely impossible to please people in here.
Make Steph look bad, y'all bitch. Make her look good and give her a series that's looking pretty well-written so far, and y'all bitch. It sucks for Cass, it really does, but I look at this page of comments and completely understand why DC tries its damndest to not ever listen to fans.

DC just should include all three Batgirls regularly, no matter what they're doing or what they're wearing. I'd be happy with that.
