#63 ended with the revelation that the "Hunters" who had been stalking our heroes were in fact cannibals. Dale had been kidnapped by them, and woke up to find his last leg roasting over the campfire. (His previous leg had been amputated after a zombie attack) Of course, Dale gets the last laugh. He had been bitten by a zombie earlier and had gone off to die, and taunts that the cannibals are in fact eating "tainted meat". (It's a pretty kickass moment for Dale--I would have posted it, but it's already available on the internet previews.) As the various Hunters vomit all over the place, the leader gets pissed off and knocks Dale out with a boot to the head.

There's also a nice character moment with Andrea. It's scenes like this that make TWD better than 99% of the other zombie comics.





The next morning, what's left of Dale is found in front of the church that they're staying. He's still alive. Rick realizes that they are being watched, and that Dale has been left for bait. Gunshots ensue, and Glenn is shot in the leg.

Hell, that's a pretty badass beginning, too. Takes balls to tell the cannibals eating your flesh that you're tainted meat, and laughing at them in the process.

Wait, I'm confused.

So any contact with tainted or infected flesh (eating, touching, etc.) will cause the people to become zombies or risk infection?

TWD established getting bitten would cause the person to turn, but was it established that eating them would yield the same result? Because if so, then aren't the Hunters doomed?

Short answer is, we don't know yet. In the issue, the Hunters admit that they don't know what effect that eating the "tainted meat" will have on them. Dale said what he said to scare them, but he probably doesn't know 100% either. So it might infect them, it might not. We'll have to wait and see.

For the record, TWD established that dying at all with your head intact will cause you to turn. The risk of a zombie bite is that you might die from infection, but that's pretty much it.
