Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction. This is the first time I felt that I was reading a Watchmen character. Dr. Manhattan making a tiny change with great consequences sounded just like him. Now, if it STAYS this way, I'll have the same reaction---but if it's undone and Alan Scott comes back, (And Jor-El dies in Krypton, etc.) I will have no complaints. Somehow Dr. Manhattan's meddling with the timestream of the DCU has to be undone.
See, I know it's in character for Dr. Manhatten. The problem is, I've never had much patience for any of the Watchmen cast, so all this time travelling nonsense does is make me want them to piss off back to their angsty little corner of reality even more than I did before.
Killing someone like that, just to see the result, sounds extremely out-of-character for Dr. Manhattan, especially given his character development as of the end of Watchmen.
Pretty sure it was “artist can’t work fast enough and we don’t want to hold the start of it off long enough to get a backlog,” but I don’t recall if I heard that or just guessed it
Y'know for all the problems I had with 'Before Watchmen' there was at least an attempt to try different styles as opposed to just aping everything Moore did.
And this more or less just shows how ridiculous the "Well, Moore used other literary characters and this is the same" argument given that Moore never did this level of copying the entire structure of the original authors.
Or rather, Moore actually did something when he was copying the entire structure of the original author. (The Black Dossier is full of these, but does interesting things with them. Like the Jeeves and Wooster Lovecraft Pastiche or the On the Road riff.)
Given how long this has been going on (over a year now), whilst characters in it have been in their own series and entire other events have been and gone like the whole "Metal" thing, how is this supposed to tie into ANYTHING in the DCU?
Fact: This series was stated to be set a year into the DC Universe's future, and would mark a new point in continuity, kind of like a reverse version of Infinite Crisis' One Year Later
Opinion: This whole series is being actively pushed into irrelevancy because Dan Didio is slowly throttling positivity in comics at the expense of his own company's profit and nothing can ever get better while he's still in charge.
Nothing. But as we all know, Didio has long been warring against the concept to bring DC Comics closer to Bronze Age Marvel. His stranglehold was tightest around the New 52, then declining sales forced him to loosen his grip with DC Rebirth, but by and by the phoney cynicism has been trickling back in.
The plan was that the rest of the universe would synch up at the end point of the series - issue 12 - so that the inevitable further series spinning out of it would hit the ground running.
With all the delays, I don't know how much water the rest of the DCU is going to have to tread to wait for the Doomsday Clock Universe to catch up.
Veidt has now fully become 'Infinite Crisis' Alexander Luthor, hasn't he?
And how can Manhattan use any sort of 'two hours ago' when there is no singular 'now' for him, and all times are simultaneous? He can use time stamps (month and year) but no measurements relative to a regular human's present. Two hours ago means nothing to him.
Hmm... Manipulative genius convinced his nebulous yet needlessly destructive plan is saving people, assisted by a bad-tempered teenager who he's just using for his own ends.
There are a few parallels, actually...
Guess we'll have to wait and see if he gathers together a massive army of supervillains as part of his Fiendish Plan.
