You premeditatedly shot him in the head from like six inches away, Rick. If you wanted to stop him without killing him, why not just grab his gun? Or shoot him in the hand? Or shoot him in the leg? Or pistol-whip him in the head? Anything other than the "MOST OBVIOUS WAY TO COMMIT HOMICIDE" example we have here, really.

Dwight was two seconds away from shooting the governor. Anything could have happened if Rick had tried to just grab his gun or restrain him. Maybe Rick could have shot his fingers off but he didn't have time to lose.
