This I like. It's totally Joker, setting up Luthor for a huge fall and then claiming some nutty reason for it. Then just giving it up on a whim, it's old school Joker that I miss.
I think it has been suggested it is a kinda "he is one of the few people I am willing to even consider a friend and whose pressence I enjoy" kinda deals.
Because the only thing worse then having to wrangle Joker when you invited him to your villain team-up, is dealing with his tantrum-provoked sabotage when he feels he's been snubbed.
Yep. Just see the "Justice" series where he helps ruin the Legion of Doom's plot because he wasn't invited to join in.
Plus, the Justice League cartoon has him justifying it with "I can provide the one thing no one else can." (plucks a bat-tracer off of Luthor's shirt) "I know how the Bat thinks."
Were there... any 'jokes' in that monologue? And the Joker admits that someone else (the superspecialawesome Batman Who Laughs) is going to do something better than what he himself had planned?
He's probably just bitter that another version of him actually managed to do something he could never do (getting Batman to (a)kill someone, with (b)that someone being the Joker, (c)make him snap and (d)see things from his point of view).
Oh look, the Joker managing to piss off several insanely powerful villains, mind-controlling them and humiliating them, and I imagine that for some reason none of them will attempt to murder him in revenge. (It's not like they have a moral objection to murder the way the heroes do) because Joker.
And "I have a spray in my flower that can eat through forcefields" is just one of those annoyingly random powerups that set my teeth on edge.
I actually lean toward how he was going to use it and it turns out to be just water. "Come on, Lex, forcefield eating spray? You really bought that? That's funny."
My main problem is the clear assumption that Joker has SCIENCE! powers like Lex. He's not only a master chemist, but he also can hijack a teleportation system AND crack security systems AND so on and so forth. Like he can do ALL the tech things...which, you know, whatever.
The desire to make him a toe-for-toe challenger with so many of the DCU's heavy hitters is just irritating to me. He should be creepy and dangerous, but his only super-power generally should be his randomness and insanity making him unpredictable and making others uncomfortable and concerned. The notion that ALL of these villians go down so easy feels lazy to me, tbh.
Agreed. As I've probably noted before, it's why I liked him in "Young Justice", where he's NOT a member of the Light, the top tier visionary villain group which consisted of Lex, Ra's Al Ghul, Klarion, Vandal Savage, Black Manta, Brain and Queen Bee, but is used by them as part of the Injustice Gang they want to use to create a diversion for their real goals, because if you want a diversion, the Joker is pretty much unbeatable.
I mean, he's shown using Light supplied tech to do some serious damage, but when that plan fails, he's seen stalking Robin with a knife.
See, I liked that in theory, but in practice 95% of that diversion was Poison Ivy's work. Joker (and for that matter the rest of the Injustice Gang) was almost completely unnecessary.
Unless you consider it as the Light killing two birds with one stone, not just distracting the heroes, but doing it in such a way that the Joker feels important, and thus less likely to bugger things up.
Or look at the Injustice League in Morrison's JLA. Lex brings him aboard because the Joker knows Batman and he's also an enemy telepath's worst nightmare, but nobody pretends that he's a heavy hitter in a physical or technological sense.
