Seuls vol. #4: The Red Cairns

Photobucket
Warning for more violence and more coarse language. And blood. Holy shit the blood! (No, not on the cover, it's only red paint, but... there's more inside.)

At the end of vol. #3, Saul mentioned he was the only one who remembered what happened and knew how everyone else vanished. Then Yvan started remembering too and now he thinks that on this fateful night, his parents were outright killed. So the little gang packs up, leaves and goes back to where they came from—and they take a few rejects from the Clan of the Shark with them. They settle back in Fortville and it takes several exploratory trips through the city to find the exact place Yvan was looking for.

So, does this ring any bells?
I'm not sure, I think it was a larger road. / Wait. Try this way.
This way!

When I came to, there were men's voices around the car, talking in a tongue I didn't understand. I dared not move. Then the voices went away. / After a while I turned my head and I saw that my parents weren't moving at all.
Then I slipped out of the car and I ran as far as I could... then I forgot everything.
I don't know why I didn't die too. Maybe 'cause I always wear my seatbelt? / It's too sad.
I'd rather be alone for a while. Could you ..? // Go back to the camp, I'll bring him back later. / OK.

Meet Betty, playing videogames instead of doing her watch duty—Sorry I didn't see you here!

...Of course, with a coat over your head, that won't help! / It's so I see the screen better, there's too much light outside. // Too much light outside... I'll rather not answer that... / Ha Ha!
You could say thanks, I lost a life opening the gate. / Thank you. / This sliding door Anton thought up sure is useful!
A bit more to the right, Leïka. OK!

Meet Edwige. (I think it's just a birthmark on her face and not a scar, but... I could be wrong.)

Thank you for your help parking the bus. / No problem, but I'd like it if you taught me to drive this thing too. / We'll do that when y- // Ho, are you insane?
What?/ Edwige I told you a hundred times, if you want to destroy houses you do that OUTSIDE! This is OUR camp and we'll have to clean up! // I finish this one and I stop, promise!
This one's totally insane. / Yeah but you're a good influence on her: back at the park it was us she hit. // Honestly, apart from Boris and you, I have this feeling we got all the losers from the Shark Clan. Between this one, the other always playing videogames, or those who won't do anything... / Hello Leïla! // As a matter of fact, it's exactly this. Boris and I left because we didn't like it there, but the others couldn't be a part of the Clan at all. / Yeah, the kind that's picked last for dodgeball teams at gym class.

And here's Ajza, around 5 years old and wearing a hijab; and Alexandre and Sélène... you can file them under «creepy children».

All the same, we already had your own deadbeats before we met you. // Terry, when you're done horsing around, come help me unload the carts. / I'm not horsing around, I'm explaining SUPER IMPORTANT things to Ajza! // You see, Darth Vador's spaceship needs to be SUPER EVILER. / So go fetch a plank to make another take-off strip.
You won't take Rascal #2! / What's happening over there? // I won't let you do to him the same as to Rascal #1!
we won't have enough for everyone with one rabbit, Camille. / We promise it won't suffer. // Go away, I tell you! / And then there's these two. They can do lots of useful things but... they creep me out. / Alexandre and Sélène? It's true they're a bit weird. We don't know where they came from, they never tlak much. // Whatever! We'll get to know each other in the long run.

The children keep discussing what they know, what they should do. Camille wants to go back to school (it's now September)—even when there are no teachers left, Anton suggest that maybe the end of the world has started and they need to learn everything they can son they can understand what's happening and how to survive it.
The Blade Master we met in vol. #2 interrupts their discussion, begging for help on little Lucie's behalf.
The gang splits up to investigate this emergency, leaving the end of the world for later.

What do you think of this Big Crunch business? / I don't really believe it. // It's the scrambled telephone lines that bug me. / Cutting communications seems like an warring army's trick. I once asw on TV that there are military waves that can fry up every electronic devices.
And other ones that fry up people's nervous systems, to make them faint, sick or panick. // The waves act on the brain and provoke weird reactions. Maybe that's why our parents forgot us and left us behind, you get it? // But why weren't we affected then? / Maybe we're special. Like Anton, he's gifted.
Or Terry, he's so not a gift! / All that's really scaring me. On top of that we don't even know who attacked us?
I found some papers near Yvan's car. I think they were written in Russian or something like that... Maybe they're the enemy, Zoé. // By the way, my real friends call me just Zo. You can call me that too if you want. / OK.
(Not to spoil everything, but, no, probably not the Russians. Don't worry about this bit.)

(Annnd, they stumble upon the titular Red Cairn!)

I swear: I'm sending you the pic, see if you still don't believe me. // It's creeptastic. Wait, Zo's telling me something. // It's just red paint, I thought it was bllod!
However... there's this. // The remains of a squirrel, half eaten up. And there's more, like raven's remains too. // So Dodji, you tell me now where we meet up and I call Boris. We can't keep split up any longer.
Oh... // You don't look well. / There's... this weight on my stomach, I don't know why... But it'll get better.

Dodji, Leïla, Boris and Zoé found the missing baby and want to charge in regardless of risks. Yvan begs to differ and strategize first, leading to an outburst from Dodji.

If you cna't make it, stay here! Don't hold me back! // But I'm not like you, Dodji. Im' not as strong as you are. // We're going with you.
I'm sorry Yvan. I'm scared too. But I don't think we have any other choice.

Turns out Yvan was right. Whatever abducted little Lucie beats them up and chase them away.
Meanwhile back at the camp, Alexandre and Sélène discuss the posibility that Camille might be «the child they're fearing»--without explaining more.

They went away. // Do have any aspirin left? / Go look upstairs, there's nothing more in Leïla's dad's bag.
We're going back tomorrow, right Dodji? We'll make them pay! / Leave it, Edwige. I don't know what we'll do. // But you'll beat them up! Anyone coming at you, you kill 'em, right? Like your stepfather!
You know NOTHING of my stepfather, OK? So shut the fuck up! // Terry, come here.
Dodji, I don't like them, those two. They scare me up. / Later Terry. I have to speak with you.

Dodji decides he's fucking things up and he needs to leave. He leaves Yvan in charge of sorting out the mess. True enough, using his brains to analyze the situation, cook up a plan and with Leïla's help, he quickly retrieves the baby from the danger she was in, without anyone else getting hurt in the process.

Hold on, I'm coming!
I... lost your gun, I'm sorry. // Doesn't matter. You did swell! / Are you coming home now? // Not yet. Being apart is doing us good, don't you think so? // If it's not too far apart, yeah.
Don't worry. I'll drop by every now and then.

But what about the Red Cairns? The Blade Master managed to communicate something about them to Anton.

[He didn't speak] but I showed him the pic of that cairn you sent us with your cellphone. / Then I showed him this city map. He pointed the place where you saw the first cairn. Then the Opera where you said there was two more. / Then he showed a bunch of other spots... and in the end, it amounts to this...
Like a big red circle. And he conveyed that the animals never went in. // What does that mean?
Dodji...

And I'm linking the very last page instead of displaying it because of Holy Shit Quotient hitting the fan.

(Not really spoilery dialogue:) Who's there? // I got soemthing for you. / No. Not you!

After what you might want to ask
But did he die?? Won't we see him again? Truly he can't be dead!
And I'd have to give a mathematician's answer. Not to be an arse about spoilers and shit, but because it's freaking complicated. I'll still try to answer when I post bits of the next album. It was published in 2009 and there were 7 more albums since then so avoiding spoilers is a bit hard now anyway...
(This storyline was totally dropped for the movie. Not that's a filler, but things were getting too complex.)
