I always knew this would be "our heroes are separated from the rebellion and on the run" part of the story, but after six issue of hell in HOPE DIES it felt like we'd be hitting the same depressing notes again and again. Then, visiting a mansion in Scotland, and looking at the sprawl of countryside I found myself thinking that what would challenge our heroes wouldn't be more in the dirt grind. It'd be a chance to be happy. -- Kieron Gillen

Intruigiing. After ROTJ and before TFW, Luke's chance to be happy would be restarting the Jedi Order. As I've said elsewhere, Luke wanted power, but not for himself. He knew the Alliance had to defeat the Empire and his becoming a Jedi would help that happen.

After ROTJ, Luke would want to restart the Jedi Order because the New Republic would need it. Given what happened, it seems he was right.

Presumably both things would make Luke happy. The first did. The second, obviously not.

You are not. If they existed then I'd have a couple around the place myself.

"Can you identify when one ended and the other began?"

Why yes, I can. In fact, I remember one big speech all about that.

Yeeeeeeep.

I'm really annoyed with the way "the Republic did some messed up things, so they are really not that different than ACTUAL FUCKING SPACE NAZIS" gets thrown around. Like when Rogue One came out, and the fact that our protagonists sometimes did some shitty things to prevent genocides meant that they were as bad as the guys actively trying to commit genocides.

The Republic used child soldiers in the form of clones to fight their battles and allowed the Jedi to raise children in a cult like fashion to become Jedi.

I agree that the Republic and Empire were/are different, but not by that much/enough, IMO.

Sure the Republic/Jedi did some shitty stuff but the Empre/Sith are still a bunch of genocidal space facists lead a cult based around being as edgelord as possible

They became that, but they didn't start out like that. There's a reason why Palpatine allowed the senate to continue to exist. If things had moved that quickly, more people would have resisted from the start.

To be fair, the earlier stuff indicates that it was a bit of a more gradual process. Remember, the Senate stuck around until ANH.

And the stuff with Ashoka's exile in the Clone Wars cartoon showed that there had been a lot of slippage at that point too. I suppose from an internal civil servant's point of view (or whatever this guy was) the big speech was merely the exclamation mark at the end of a very long paragraph. Palpatine had been accruing "emergency" powers, changing procedures, slanting public opinion, and placing his minions for a very long time. I think this new guy is being unnecessarily melodramatic, but he is not entirely inaccurate especially if he was an insider.

I think its meant to be that an increasingly corrupt and out of touch Senate, allowed Shev's rise to power and the increased militarization. And that the last days of the Republic weren't all that different from the start of the Empire

But you know the Republic and the Empire are distinct entities. He just sounds kind of dumb.

Something about that lizard-bear-thing's pose as it stands up looks hilarious to me.

Seeing the faces of Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford flirting with each other, I can't help but remember Fisher's autobio tell-all describing their IRL relationship. "He was terrible in bed, but he was so handsome..."

I'm curious if these folks are being built up for a reveal as a Mandalorian clan.

Built up? If that's not a Mandalorian armor (complete with trophy tooth necklace) then I'm a Gungan.
