I used to love Kellogg's Variety Packs when I was a kid, because you could have Cocoa Puffs one morning and Sugar pops the next. There was variety. I like variety. In some of the old comics, you'd get two stories, four stories, eight stories, all of different sorts and different lengths between the covers. You got a sense of having had a full meal, a full five-course dinner or something. That was something I wanted to try and instill into Tomorrow Stories. -- Alan Moore

Not sure how much the "variety" aspect works since all but Greyshirt are parodies (and even his name is a parody of a British character, I believe), but it's all good stuff.

Greyshirt seems to be the most obvious parody - it's clearly a reference to the Spirit, including aping Eisner's style.

Greyshirt is more of an homage than parody.

Well, in those variety packs, no matter what you picked you were still getting unhealthy sugary breakfast cereal, just in slightly different flavors. The analogy pretty much checks out.

I still have no idea what Moore and Gebbie were trying to accomplish with that all-purple doll-o-vision. Not only is it ugly as sin, you can barely make out what's going on in it.

I read the latter part of that as part of point. Leave us to imagine (with horror? with purience?) all manner of sadomasochistic doll torture of the sort that would have gotten Wertham all worked up without actually explicitly portraying it.

Or, given that it's an Alan Moore project, probably allude to an earlier book that used a similar device.
