See like, this is still not for me but I do feel like it's better than it was at the start. If Marvel had like had Ewing or Gillen or someone co-writing to start it might have given Rivera a better grasp of comics writing and fixed some of the pacing and dialogue issues. It just seems like a weird, amateur move to put her in without seeing if she could write comics first.
I agree. If Rivera had had an experienced comics writer just to help her with pacing and dialogue, just to show her what works for this particular medium, this could have been amazing with a unique voice.
Agreed... but this is so strangely off the mark that I wonder why Rivera didn't say no to the gig. I suppose we artists and writers are taught not to turn down opportunity in the face, but still, as far as this run goes it's really not her medium.
Where were her editors? Did she have no one to reach out to for advice on how approach this? Again, did her editors not speak up??
It's not really fair on her or anyone else really.
Honestly you're probably giving Rivera or Marvel too much credit as to realizing that she can't write. If I had to guess it was probably one big echo chamber with everyone patting her on the back. She gave a TED talk just last month about this comic (even though it's cancelled) so she's never realized that this comic was cow dung.
It's actually a pretty cool talk about navigating Latinx identity. Sort of using the comic to focus the point? And I mean, she can write. She's published a successful novel and there are clearly good ideas in America. Just buried. And maybe it was an echo chamber with her editors not correcting her, but that was their job and they should have done it. It's not her fault they didn't.
Remember how in her original appearance, Exterminatrix wore her gimp mask because her father had convinced her she was hideous, but it turned out she was actually quite comely?
