This storyline is so freaking weird. I mean, it feels so all over the place. X-Men vs X-Man and his mind-controlled Horseman vs Legion, the younger X-Men (and seriously, a group composed of Rockslide, Armor, Pixie, and ... Glob Herman??? What, were literally all the better New Mutants/New X-Men/Young X-Men/students-in-training unavilable?) and now an entire issue devoted to this side-trip to Age of Apocalypse...

And seriously, what the fuck is up with the Age of Apocalypse, anyway? Ever since it wasn't -actually- wiped out at the end of the actual crossover, it keeps coming back to get further and further wrecked, and I thought maybe we'd have seen the last of it after that crossover with the Exile and its own short-lived title, and yet here we are again... was this left over from Secret Wars, or something else? Sheesh.

And of course this is all lead in for Age of X-Man, where the normal X-titles get replaced by funkier, weirder, probably cooler titles for a while, and after -that- is over, we'll have another reality to hang about plaguing us for years to come. (Who wants to bet that at least one or more of the most popular Age of X-Man characters will somehow make the jump to the prime universe to join the team... double bonus points if they're original characters introduced during the event.)

People joke that English is the language that beats up other languages in dark alleys and steals from them. I say that the X-Men is the franchise that beats up other realities and steals characters from them. Between the time travelers and dimension-hoppers, the X-Men have never met an alternate version of themselves they didn't want to keep.

Mostly I'm just bummed that this is the second time they've done a demonic-looking version of Pixie. The first one was a way better design.

Nightmare was better than this wannabe Disney Gargoyle in literally every way.

IIRC Pixie asked to be able to keep her ability to shift into her harpy form when Age of X ended. It's always bugged ne that she's never used it after making such a fuss about it, but her having an interim form seems fair enough.

I think Thompson and her editor may have missed the point regarding this reboot. The idea I think should have been to keep things relatively simple in order to maybe draw in new readers or to bring old ones back. For example, they've gotten rid of the five time displaced X-Men which was a good thing.

Instead this kind've feels like the X-Men's greatest hits and it's become a convoluted mess. It's also going on too long. Six issues should have been plenty of comic to tell a story and now it's entered X-Men Red territory where it's probably going to go on for twelve issues.

If it were up to me and they needed three X-Men titles (Which was what we got before) then all three titles need to accomplish something different; why was there a Red team when there was already a Gold, for example. Have a standard team, a team of young mutants headed up by a or who like The Champions is kind've fed up with adult shenanigans and have gone their own way, and send the third team into space or something.

As Jay and Miles point out in their New Year Special today, whilst in theory there should always be an X-book which is about a team of young mutants, there have now been so many of them it's getting a bit untenable.

If you look at the combined membership of the various New Mutants's, original X-Force and Generation X's etc you have a vast stable of varied mutant characters that no one knows what to do with once their original writer has left, because no one can be allowed to replace the sainted late 80's/early 90's team lineup (Since that allows Gambit and Psylocke to remain)

Out of the original New Mutants, only one seems to be a regular on an X-Team, Cannonball, and the rest are scattered hither and yon, mostly forgotten. Generation X only really has Jubilee left making regular appearances (and that seems to be because she was in the 90's cartoon that everyone remembers fondly) and the rest I don't list because I didn't buy those comics.

We just had another new team with Nature Girl, Eye Boy and co. as I recall.

I think we might need something different, something that explores the NEXT stage of the former young mutants lives especially the ones who DIDN'T go on to become costumed heroes full time, the Avenue Q to these teams, Sesame Street as it were. See them explore and deveop the mutant subculture society we haven't really seen since Morrison. We could see more of past characters in new scenarios.

Oh I understand the problem on how you have New Mutants, Generation X and various other groups of youngsters and now not-so-youngsters running around. I'm just saying the story opened up with Armor and one or two other young mutants butting heads with Jean Grey I think and resenting her high-handed attitude. I wouldn't want to see a whole new team of new characters, rather let's get some of these younger mutants we've already seen together on a team with a flagship character that could anchor the team and help secure readers. If we did that we could explore your idea. In fact maybe make it a Mission: Impossible/Global Frequency/Suicide Squad type concept where the lead mutant and a couple other reliables like Armor and Pixie call up a different team based on the needs of the mission. Some mutants might turn down the call, or we might find out some of the mutants have gone rogue. And yeah, it's possible a time or two a mutant might die in the line of duty.

I don't know, as weird and funky this storyline seems to be, I can't help but feel this new relaunch post-ResurreXion all seems a bit... safe, for lack of a better term.

Rachel is a Hound... again. The X-Mansion blew up... again. Apocalypse and his four Horsemen... again. The Mutant youth is revolting... again. The X-Men are facing something that could destroy either/both them and/or mutant kind forever... again. Pixie is demonic-looking again, Logan's somehow everywhere at once again, Laura Kinney is X-23 again, again again again again again.
