FIREFLY #3: War criminals

In the new FIREFLY series, a character is saying that Mal and Zoe are war criminals. But that can't be true... right?





Two issues have gone by with Mal and Zoe getting accused of being war criminals. Which seems to be a serious thing in "The 'Verse."





This must be the "Fort Sumpter" moment in the Unification War. It makes a little more sense than the Independents wanting "the right be wrong," whatever that meant.





"Firefly" and "Serenity" set up a massive world. But since Firefly only lasted a season and Serenity downplayed the "western" element, we did not get that much about it.

While this new series is entertaining, I am not the biggest Firefly/Serenity fan. It had more potential than what was actually produced.

Not going to make any allowances for Malcolm's behavior during the war since we didn't really see a lot of it but the losing side is generally the one that's gets the "War Criminal" label more than the victors. There are exceptions of course.

"Civil wars" are generally anything but that. By the end of them no one's hands are clean.

Well Mal and Zoe are space-criminals who used to be in the space-Confederacy in the space-Civil War so I'm a little puzzled as to why anyone would be surprised that they aren't the best people in this space-western. I'm a little puzzled as to how "they used to be bad people" is a shocking revelation when they're STILL bad people...just slightly less bad. The show rarely made them the good guys, they just went up against people who were worse.

It wasn't quite clear who the "bad guys" were in the Unification War, the Alliance or the Independents. Various fanfics I've read use the "space-Confederacy" metaphor to have Mal say things like "An intense dislike of slavery is probably the only thing the Alliance and I have in common."

Given what we know of the Verse in general, I don't think there were any "good guys" in that war. Granted that's true most of the time in real life (who caused WW1, again?) and there's a tendency to just retroactively paint the losers as the bad guys. Granted things like slavery and genocide don't do the Confederacy or the Nazis any favors and really overshadow any legitimate grievances they may have.
