“When we first teamed for Daredevil, DC called us. This was years ago. They offered me and Alex to leave Marvel and come do Batman. We looked at each other and were like, ‘ahh they finally called and we can’t come!’ Anyone can relate to this, once in a while you get a call and later you think, ‘I wonder what would have happened if I had done this?’ There was no sliding door, we weren’t going to leave Marvel at the time. But we’ve always thought about it. So when I came to DC, I had to call Alex. He said, ‘I want Batman! I’ve waited so many god damn years!’ If you put a piece of paper in front of Alex, he’ll draw Batman. That’s his go-to. So there was a lot of context when DC offered us to do a story in Detective Comics #1000. I was like oh yeah, this will scratch that itch beautifully for me and Alex.” -- Brian Michael Bendis

The story can be read here.

I always thought Bendis was a good fit for Batman.

Apparently, he specifically requested Superman.

Yeah, that was at least part of the reason he left Marvel for DC

I'd actually be interested in a full run if he ever feels inclined.

Me too. But, to be fair, his run on Superman has actually been pretty enjoyable. He writes a very...well, for lack of a better term, Supermanny Superman.

I dunno... I thought it was a great story up to the second-to-last page, but that ending was overkill. Oswald is a decrepit old man who seems barely able to walk. Electrocuting him seems very unnecessary.

In the DC universe, that's probably still enough to kill sixteen Marines or something.

Kill them, eat them, have sex with their penguins.

... Yeah, he's never going to live that down.

Looking at the rogue's gallery, are we still going with sexy six-pack Riddler? Because that still doesn't not throw me for a tiny loop.

I would love to see Maleev drawing Nightwing in action. And/or a proper James Bond comic.

I love the art but the story is errr what? Is it just supposed to show that Penguin is insane, and that's it?

Um, I'm fully aware this is an AU. I'm talking about Penguin's motivation for not killing Bruce Wayne that seems nonsensical to me.

Why?

A Batman without the distraction of Bruce Wayne will wreck all their shit. He'd be on the 24/7. Even if he didn't resort to killing, he'd still be a much greater threat than he was/is.

Plus, if Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian/Alfred were at the party and got killed in the explosion? That's the Mother and Father and all Ancestors of roaring rampage of revenge right there.

THAT is not the motivation in the comics.
He says "if I miss and destroy Bruce Wayne and not Batman" and then continues to ramble about Batman's tether to humanity. Like, what? You blow up Bruce successfully = you blow up Batman. Successfully. Done and done. What metaphorical nonsense is Penguin talking about?

...that's exactly what you do with bombs stripped to a legion of penguins. Yeah, right.

Penguin's tried his tricks in the past, and failed.

If he misses, as he has done in the past but exposes Batman's ID, then he's got a pissed off Batman to deal with. A Batman without the distractions of a secret ID and a grudge, all pointed at him.

So yeah, I can see how the thought would scare Penguin.

Yay, that's the first explanation that actually makes sense, TY!
However, Cobblepot could just go for literally anything else than an army of very slow birds with the bombs attached to them if he didn't want to reveal the secret during the murder attempt. Alas!

No, it's not. "Killing Bruce as a person" and "revealing his secret identity" is not the same.

Erm, if Bruce survives, then he can potentially recreate his life. Being blown up does not kill an idea of a normal person. It either kills a person. Or it does not. The Penguin is mixing up some metaphorical nonsense with literal murder. That's why I called the motivation weird. Like, omg, just get better at killing billionaires!

If it sooo tires you to speak with me as a normal person would, and not in this condescending tone, you should better stop.

That’s what Penguin is worried about.

The combination of the army of explosive penguins with such in-depth psychological analysis seems weird and awkward to me.

You’ve been condescending and passive aggressive from the getgo to everyone here?
What? I never said anything about anyone, I said that I don't get the story. It's not I who's been "sighing" here.

I've always thought that a villain would be more afraid of a superhero without a secret ID than one with one.

Even if they don't kill, that means they have a full day to mess up your business

"WEYP"? That's a weird way of spelling the Penguin's squawk, and I really can't hear how it's even meant to be pronounced!

That's five pages, not the four which is the pagecount limit for the issue

Please trim

And as a result no one will be able to post any more from the issue when it comes out, which seems a shame when the preview is posted elsewhere on line.
