But only one is specifically associated with the phrase "nasty woman."
Part of me wants to like this or at least support it. At least it's trying to treat sexual assault seriously, instead of just using it as emotional set dressing like Infinite Crisis. But moments like this are just so OTT, the sensation of being manipulated pulls me out of the story.
I suppose I shouldn't let established history get in the way of ham-fisted allegories, but didn't Heggra rule Apokolips as its merciless despot for ages before Darkseid assassinated her?
Ya know, I can't help but think that original or other characters would have been better suited to a story like this, given the sheer amount of internal logic we have to ignore.
Prior to this, Apokolips was defined by being super evil. The ruling elite, of which the Female Furies are, oppress billions, murder on a whim and operate on two guiding rules. Obey Darkseid and survival of the fittest. Until now, Aurelie whupping that guy's ass in public would be met with a promotion, not rule lawyering to get her in trouble.
And again, the Furies are basically stormtroopers. It doesn't make what's happening to Aurelie right by any means, but it;s hard to feel sorry for someone who is otherwise a complete f**king monster, trying to get promoted on monster planet and monster society, working under a super duper monster.
I know we're supposed to think less of the other Furies for not standing by her, but internal logic up until now would mean that despite their words, they're actually being very kind. They haven't gutted her by now for her weakness. And are we supposed t feel sorry that they're not getting any internal promotions? That they'll never get to raze a planet, only cities?
I just think the Furies are the worst medium with which to address this subject. As TV Tropes would say, yes, some anvils need to be dropped, but this is more like a stink bomb than an anvil
Yeah, it's much like that recently-posted story giving Granny Goodness a backstory in which Darkseid constantly sexually harasses her and worse, and then gives her the unglorious job of running the orphanage. As others have said, it fails as a commentary on sexual harassment and discrimination because GG is such a monster there's a real cognitive dissonance involved in trying to feel sorry for her.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
