I wouldn't be surprised if Amanda Waller ran her prison as a company town. She bought Giganta's mortgage, and the cost of living in the prison, the food, clothes, and the mortgage interest all add up to more than Giganta is paid.
In a way, I thought the being on a date comment to be more incongruous. Or Waller runs her prison entirely on economic terms.
Giganta's got a point. When privileged people curl their lip at the mention of money, chances are excellent that they never had to worry about it to put food on the table, a roof over their heads, and clothes on their backs. I love Diana, but in the non-Amazon world, a girl's gotta eat.
Half a mil seems cheap for going up against the Titans!
Exactly! Money makes the world go 'round. A lot of people aren't being greedy if they want to win the lottery; they just want relief from money worries!
Exactly, don't get me wrong though; I'd love to live in a Star Trek/The Orville/The Culture type of world where the satisfaction of a good job well done, or the respect for a good deed performed, is all the payment or salary a person needs, but this ain't that world. We live in a world which revolves around how much cash you got and how fast and deep you can fall if you run out. As long as we do, then "pay me" is a reasonable position to take.
I'd love to live in a world like that, too, but we know the reality. People without money, out on the street, are there because they have no money. The other percentage are the mentally ill who for various reasons aren't getting help, but money is a major reason.
Lose your job? You lose your car to get around to interviews. You lose your home and can't bathe or dress properly for interviews. You spend all your time trying to find food and warding off danger. Not likely to get a job. The spiral is a vicious cycle.
You can get help, but a lot of people fall through the cracks. Money gives you food, a home, a job.
"Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people – as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts... deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers... put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time... and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people will become as nasty and violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon."
""The way I see it, hew-mons used to be a lot like Ferengi: greedy, acquisitive, interested only in profit. We're a constant reminder of a part of your past you'd like to forget." "We don't have time for this…" "But you're overlooking something: Hew-mons used to be a lot worse than the Ferengi. Slavery. Concentration camps. Interstellar wars. We have nothing in our past that approaches that kind of barbarism. You see? We're nothing like you. We're better. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a lock to pick."
No slavery, but women weren't allowed to earn money. Or talk to strangers. Or go outside. Or wear clothing ever. And any pregnancy that may have occurred was treated as a lease.
True, that. While the show made it clear that was changing, as presented in the show they were super misogynistic. I’m sure the Ferengi saw a difference, but Ferengi women? Not so much. The show did actually present one who had no trouble violating those rules, but I don’t recall much about her.
So... why can't Diana just call Bruce up, ask him if he can provide some help with Doris' cash problems? I mean, half a mil is peanuts for Bruce, and Wayne Industries is always favourable to ex-cons looking for another chance.
-"That's a totally reasonable sum for a job involving the risk of actual death"- Possibly too reasonable, actually, for something involving fighting beings out of myths and legends. Should'a haggled more.
I really like it when writers make Giganta interesting and relateable... I loved her depiction in the Ryan Choi Atom series, for instance. I like her here as well, just because she feels like someone with actual goals and desires apart from being a Get Big Supervillain.
I don't blame her for wanting compensation for doing something like this.
Maybe I'm more ol' skool, but I loved the DCAU's mute, former grodd associate/creation who had a crush on the flash Giganta better, she was more mysterious.
God, the DCAU was great. Plus as an adult, I can chuckle at the subtle implications Shade has a giantess fetish (not that there's anything wrong with that).
