This just read so... hamfisted. I mean, it literally reads like someone came up with a really good idea for a plot... and then they gave it to the person least capable of making it happen.
It really is. This could have been a magnificent science fantasy parable, but instead we've got the dullest version of the Fourth World imaginable. Granny as the former victim now upholding the system could be great - but not when she's talking about being "one of the boys" or telling alien warriors to throw a drink in a guy's face.
I was thinking much the same. It had a lot of potential and I'd seek it out based on the elevator pitch. And I do respect it for not flinching from the horrors of its subject matter, but one needs much more than a parade of microaggressions and macroaggressions to fashion an actual story.
Agreed. You give to say, Gail Simone, she'll would definitely have plenty of dark elements and feminist themes, but she'll also focus on characterization, dynamics and action and give enough breaks from the misery to make you care.
