There's something about the guy that can bring out the best in a lot of writers. Just how they can present someone who doesn't hide behind a mask of nobility like Doom or Thanos and is just up front on being pure evil and loving it.
Rereading the clone saga with all the editorial in fighting in mind makes for an interesting read.
I mean you can easily see where they are setting up each of their bizarre ending ideas only to back track and have to fix things after wards. It's one reason it is such a mess.
I'm just baffled this was the best way to 'erase' the marriage they could have come up with.
If they had done something like "Peter only unmasked because he was married to MJ, so if we go back in time to stop that from occurring he won't unmask and May will never be shot" even if people hated the reversing of the marriage we wouldn't have the stain of Peter making a deal with the devil.
What gets me is even if you for some reason just had to use devil deal to do the retconning why have Peter make the deal why not have I don't know Norman Osborne make the deal.
I mean imagine Peter rejects Mephisto like a hero should and accepts his Aunt's death showing growth as a character.
Mephisto being the double dealing bastard that he is immediatley goes to Norman and offers him his son Harry back, the privilege of being the only villain to know spider man's secret identity and as a bonus gets to take away the love of Peter's life and kill his unborn child.
Then the final issue could have been Norman telling Peter exactly what he'd done just before the deal takes effect turning into an acutal gut punch and leaving you routing for Peter as a hero to some day find out and fix things.
I also hate how they tease and play around with elements introduced here, but don't have the guts to commit to doing anything with it. Peter and MJ's souls "remembering what they lost," they ever really do anything there?
Or better, how about whatever Peter does that will see Mephisto get his soul straight up? Have they even BEGUN approaching that?
As bad as this is, there were interesting things they could have taken off of it, and so far, haven't.
