"The last version of this line I turned in began with 'Admit it, /co/.' I wanted to give their Gwenpool support a special shoutout. I really did. Another version was like 'Hey, /co/--my nipples don't look like that! But I appreciate your enthusiasm!'" -- Leah Williams

I have to say, I don't much care for this title or the way the title character is written.

I unfortunately have to agree.
I'll just assume that I'm too old to get this "throw everything at the wall at breakneck speed" type of humor....

I rather like it, personally.

I loved the original series, but this new one is less appealing to me. I think the original focused a lot more on the character and her coming to grips with a ridiculous situation, while this new version is just being ridiculous for its own sake. But that's just my first thought on it -- I'd have to really sit down and compare them to figure out why one clicked and the other isn't.

Gwen talking about being a teenager in tandem with repeated sexual references just makes me super uncomfortable, to be honest.

Yeah, that's something the original series didn't really have. (Aside from her repeated displeasure with the fact that she couldn't get a costume that covered her legs.) Even when she dated Quentin Quire in West Coast Avengers, they didn't get too deep into it.

The original series actually steered clear of romance in favor of, for instance, exploring a 'father-daughter' type relationship between her and Batroc, or exploring how she built friendships in a reality she at first saw as fake and disposable, and I think those worked much better.

I have met teenagers, and huge interest in sex is not out of character for late teens. Although I am not sure if she counts as a teen or someone who has had their aging stopped at 19.

I like Leah Williams as a writer, but her style tends towards the well... frenetic. There's a certain manic energy that I've seen both here and in the X-Tremists, for example, and it sometimes feels as though she's sacrificing pacing for cramming in content. Her version of Gwenpool is definitely on the chaotic side, and I wonder how Williams' stories might do if she was able to relax just a little, slow down, and trust in the reader.

I don't mind this title... I just wish Unbelievable Gwenpool or even West Coast Avengers lasted longer instead. (Possibly because I'm very much not on /co/.)

I can appreciate Gwen's taste because man, Reed looks fly with that beard.

I love that Sue doesn't do the huffy, rom-rom thing where she 's like "TWO TIMER!" and instead trusts her husband and the like. Like a married partner really should.

She wouldn't have a leg to stand on anyway, given all the Namor stuff.

Granted if either one of them is in an extramarital relationship then it's Reed boinking Doom.

Streching powers.

Not sure what was wrong with seducing Johnny. Not unusual enough to interest readers maybe?

Too easy, and wouldn't have the same cachet as messing with Marvel's Biggest Marriage.

I think that this script would work better as a cartoon, rather than a still comicbook. That's the weird disconnect I'm getting.

In fairness, Gwenpool coming as much more hyper and in-your-face (literally) is kind of the point. She's doing this because she's afraid of being a fad and fading into irrellevance.

Painting herself as the wacky comic relief character is not a way to go though, not in the Marvel verse. I wouldn't want to be a wacky comic relief character in Marvel's break 'em for maximum drama-angst idiom.

Plus I'm not sure that is gonna put a writer off pairing her with Deadpool, it just makes them seem like a more natural fit. She'd be better off antagonising Wolverine until he adopts her like all the other kids. Better chance of survival that way, although also a chance of becoming a dracula; is Wolverine dead or on the Cult Island during this comic though?

Is she normally meant to be out-and-out psychotic, though? I admit I don't follow her appearances that closely, but didn't her shtick used to be "I'm an isekai [trapped in another world] character, only not Japanese, and with full medium awareness, so I'm gonna exploit said awareness to have fun and do superhero things?" As opposed to this, which is more "Lookit me, I'm a waaaaacky destructive agent of chaos like the Joker except that I don't kill anyone!" (Unless she actually does in scenes not posted here? I know Deadpool's killed before.)

Having a bit of a psychotic break kinda makes sense, since she's realized that she's a comic book character now and that means if she doesn't put on a good enough show she will e cancelled an thus possibly fade entirely from existence. And she's already had one book cancelled. It's enough to make anyone lose it, really.

4chan is a festering swamp of "ironic" bigotry. Nobody should be legitimizing it.

I hoped it would smartly play up the first wacky issue, but it's still very "errrr?". Well, I'll hope for the next one. For now it seems nothing like the original comics, and just desperately failing as its own thing.
