I rather liked the pilot. It has plenty of issues typical to pilots, but it's neat seeing how they're remixing and refocusing so many elements of Batwoman into a new but still recognizable thing.

Ruby Rose, right? I haven’t been following this show (heck, I didn’t even realise Batwoman got her own show until this post), but there was a spot of controversy since because she wasn’t Jewish or gay like the character is, she shouldn’t have been cast or even allowed to be cast to play her.

Ruby Rose is indeed gay (and genderfluid, though prefers to use female pronouns) it was the "not being Jewish too" that attracted some ire IIRC.

Bruce is Jewish and Dick is Roma, but not a single character playing them was/is, and I don’t see any wank regarding it.

The only reason Margot Robbie isn't getting flack for it is they probably don't know Harley is Jewish.

And, of course (And this is where the murder fantasies come in), there's the alt-right neckbeard/Comicsgate/incel crowd that loses their minds over ANY superhero movie or series with a female lead. Ruby is hated by them just as Brie Larson and Margot Robbie are. Jurnee Smollett-Bell has become a target for them now because of her skin color.

Hmm...how does the 'Jewish if mom is' thing work if she converts? (I don't know if Martha converted, but it seems likely since Bruce seems to have been raised in a wholly Christian environment.) That is to say, if Bruce decided to start practicing, would he be considered to be converting or just picking up after a (lifelong) lapse?

The Kanes appear to be, which would mean Martha would be, and thus, by the principle of 'if your mother's Jewish, so are you', so would Bruce be. (Unless, as I address above, Martha converted and that affects that.) He's obviously not a practicing Jew (actually seems to be culturally Christian), of course.

It's also possible that Jacob converted when he married Gabi, so he, Kate and Beth are the only surviving Jewish members of the family.

(But I generally assume the Kanes are Jewish, and that's part of why they dislike Thomas - Martha marrying a gentile.)

I mean, you can't have it both ways. But most of the complaints I've heard about her are people overblowing how bad of an actress she is. Just seems to have turned into one of those things where people hate her just because.

Right. It's still routed in misogyny, it's just that that is the 'reason' I've heard from people as to why they hate her. Women are just held to higher/impossible standards.

she comes off a LITTLE stiff at some points in the pilot (might be the accent she is trying to cover up) BUT it's no different than any other superhero show pilot I have seen. I have been told her fights and her actin are already better come episode 2
