I don't care how many times they try to make him happen...
I find myself lacking all interest whatsoever in Azrael as a character or a concept. As far as I'm concerned, he died at the end of his series all those many years ago, and that's that. I don't care if it's Michael Lane(?) or Jean-Paul Valley or someone else. I don't care if it's nanotech or a cursed suit or an angel's spirit or a secret society programming--he just bores me. It's like "nutty religious guy, sword, tries to out-bat Batman... okay, what now." Nice visuals, but I check out mentally every time he shows up.
Though I like how he can carry a machine gun and a sword on his back.
Also, can't Bruce afford some maternity clothes for Harley? It looks ridiculous to have her sporting that tight top and showing off the baby bump in such fashion.
Same. "Religious nut job with vague Catholic overtones" is boring. But genuinely abused person trying to rebuild themselves was interesting and touching.
That's why I stuck with his series until it ended and he supposedly (apparently for reals) died. All attempts to bring Azrael back post-New 52 just haven't done it for me. (Okay, someone did link to a decent moment in the Detective run, but overall...)
I just wish it was Jason. It would have fit thematically and been more interesting. You know what? You'd get a better story if you replaced every instance of Azrael with Red Hood. Seriously.
I was very surprised when this series was first announced, because I had really expected Murphy to do a take on the Red Hood stuff given how much it had been seeded in what I'd seen of White Knight. It could easily fit Murphy's whole approach, and to me would be much more interesting than another Joker and Harley centric story with a nonsensical conspiracy element.
Would a brown gay woman seriously think that her multi-minority status helped her career? Especially in a deeply conservative environment like the police, where even unions are right wing?
Brooklyn 99 did it better. When Holt is promoted, it's played as "oh thank god the people with power have loosened their prejudices enough to allow a ridiculously competent individual to get a decent reward for collecting impressive achievements for decades."
I'm a little unclear on the details of the 'conspiracy' which caused the Joker to lose his mind (which... is not a great origin) but his reaction seems kind of overblown. Like, "historical figures were bad" couldn't surprise anyone who's even just familiar with pop history. It's as though the Joker became a supervillain because he found out that the founding fathers were hypocritical slave owners. Now if he'd hit on some HP Lovecraft level bullshit and had a whole cosmic horror 'come to Jesus' moment, maybe it'd make some kind of sense.
For all the extremely superficial "realism" of this series, Montoya doesn't make any sense as commissioner. She's detective, she's had no experience in a position of authority, and Murphy draws her looking like she couldn't be older than 30. Her becoming commissioner would only happen in Murphy's weird "good cop" loving take on Gotham.
Honestly, the more I see of it, the more I really do find the whole sensibility of Murphy's Batman stuff to be deeply unpleasant. Murphy should have stuck to working with writers.
