So, I looked up the leaks on this (which, judging by the trailer, seem to be true). No spoilers, but the plot seems... inoffensive (at least, they're cutting out the stupidest part of it), so the quality of the movie will likely come down to the writing, acting, and action.

With that said, Cassandra Cain fans will probably hate it on principle.

Wonder how they'll be handling Batman in the DCEU from now on given that Affleck is out and Reeves' film seems to be in a new continuity. Is he just going to be offscreen?

They'll probably handle him the same way they handled Superman in Shazam?

So just wondering, are we pretending that this isn't using several minority characters to prop up the whitest girl ever, who's only power is poor taste in men?

Just curious.

From what I know about the production (and I could be wrong). it's actually the opposite.
Margot Robbie capitalized on the popularity of Harley PRECISELY to make a female-lead superhero movie with multiple female characters. as far as I know, it's BECAUSE of Harley that these characters got a movie at all.
Now admitely, the marketing does seem to focus on Harley an awful lot. but given how marketing can be, it can be a case of them trying to make it look like it is all Harley.

Frankly, I haven't seen anything to indicate that this isn't Suicide Squad, where the big star runs roughshod over the entire cast.

Harley's 'popularity' isn't helping these characters at all, not if they're used poorly. It's not as if any of them are obscure and it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if they waited until a writer actually interested in them came along.

Cas will likely be the best example of that. Her archtype has enjoyed some movie success. Here, she's barely a sidekick

Then I think I should point out this movie was championed and green-lighted when female lead superhero movies were a hard sell.
Like it's hard to see now because of recent developments in superhero movies suddenly allowing for more diverse movies. But at the time, if you waited for someone "interested", you might as well say the movie would never get made.

If this is the movie they made, I'd rather it not get made at all, frankly.

I don't think a movie works towards diversity, if the minority characters are used solely to prop up the main white character. Who's main character is being the ex-girlfriend of a more popular character.

This movie looks to be nothing more than lip service, at best.

I mean, Cass's archetype is a mess of racist tropes, and it's only with decades of character development she's really become a three dimensional character. I 100% do not trust a movie studio to take "mute asian girl who's super badass at martial arts" and sell her as an exotic sex object to a white male audience.

I do think the trailer here isn't promising for the non-Harley characters, but frankly, I don't think most of the BoP have much of a profile outside of comics. Most of them have stints in various separate TV shows, but they're actually pretty cult. It's this or nothing, and at least a diverse collection of actresses are getting paid to work in a film that doesn't reduce them to throwaway love interests for a male character.

Are you dismissing Cass’ first series as racist?

Cass has always been a three-dimensional character, and she stopped being mute in the fourth issue of her series.

If the only way they can use her character without making her an exotic sex object is to make her Cass-in-name-only, maybe they shouldn't be using her in the first place.

Hate to break it to you, but they are pretty obscure. (I guess with the exception of Dinah and Babs)

I meant with regards to DC powers that be. All are Bat affiliates.

Being obscure to the public shouldn't matter at this point. So was/were the Guardians, Suicide Squad and a whole mess of movies. Aquaman was a joke until recently.

The public has clearly shown to have an pen mind

What was the stupidest part of the plot, might I ask?

This looks cool, in any case. Suicide Squad’s a guilty pleasure of mine, and this looks like more of the kind of neon Hot Topic-style goodness I liked about the last one. Hopefully this is better edited and more cohesive than that film, though.

There are always advance screening to see people's reactions to a movie before it gets released, so that a potential critical failure is avoided. Some of the audience members later talk online about what they saw.

I would like to see it (if only to support female-lead movies, given that this seems to be Birds Of Prey in name only, and I was very disappointed in Suicide Squad).

But... it's R-tated. And I'm a total wuss for gore. I tried watching Kill Bill once and it almost made me vomit, had to give up on watching the sequels. I could just very barely stomach Deadpool 1&2, I had to close my eyes several times.

And the villain is Black Mask. The dude with a fetish for torture. He force-fed a freaking eyeball to a chained-up woman.

I'm afraid I will probably have to skip it :/

The only DC live action movie I have ever liked was Wonder Woman, and that was an obvious fluke. Nonetheless, I want to see this movie for Ellen Basco, even if I end up not liking it. I didn't like The Last Jedi, but I was content with watching it for Kelly Tran. I find Margot Robbie's voice to be annoying, I have previously only seen her roles dubbed.

So this is less a 'Birds of Prey featuring Harley Quinn' movie and more a 'Harley Quinn with some sidekicks that are the BoP in name only and lack anything fans of the BoP would probably like about them', huh. Think I'll pass.

Honestly, trying to do any sort of Birds of Prey origin without Barbara Gordon involved just seems fundamentally wrong. It's like trying to do an X-Men origin without Xavier: theoretically possible, but why would you do it in the first place.

I like Harley a lot and for all I know I might end up watching the film once it's out of theaters (if only for the possibility of Dinah/Helena tiny little moments. I hope the acting and the script make it salvageable), but I agree with most of the comments: these people don't feel like the Birds of Prey. Besides I get it's an adaptation, blah blah, but not including Oracle is just... wrong.

And if we were going to get a Harley team film, I'd still prefer one that at least included Poison Ivy.
