I really like the stories where Jonah has a point. This makes good use of Peter's self-destructive tendencies without absolutely beating them into the ground.
I just played through the ps4 Spiderman (late to the party, I know) and as the game went I kind of found myself...maybe not agreeing with JJ, but he definitely started to make more sense as the city's destruction level started to climb.
It used to be that Jonah just didn't "get it." Mixed with some stuff about the evils of tabloid journalism because William Randolph Hearst. That was leveled down to "Jonah doesn't like masked vigilantes" and "Jonah is a good guy (if a loudmouth) and an honest journalist who has a massive blindspot about Spider-Man because the Silver Age."
Now that Jonah knows the Big Secret, he certainly gets it. Or gets most of it. I'm not quite in the "Spider-Man thinks he deserves to be hated" camp. because Peter Parker isn't THAT screwed up.
I mean, there is the argument that he has undiagnosed depression (that's less "thinks he deserves to be hated" and more "thinks he doesn't deserve to be loved"). It isn't as obvious as it is with Daredevil (seriously, why haven't they made that subtext text?) but I do get a similar "sad clown" vibe from Spider-Man and Iceman.
huh that's interesting. An antagonizing relationship between Peter and Jonah based on Jonah thinking Peter should actually start thinking of himself as a hero and letgo of the self hate.
JJJ is the best supporting character in comics.I say it every time and it is still true.
Also, I feel sorry for Overdrive here and I'm not sure I should. I know he never really wanted to be a criminal and all this was some stupid plan to "audition" for the Avengers or whatever and he keeps getting in over his head. Still, what did he THINK was going to happen when he threw in with the mob?
