So is this like what happened with the Helmet of Fat after Infinite crisis where it gets passed around to different characters before ending up with its new owner?
Sif used the Bifrost during an argument with Thor over Beta Ray Bill to send Mjolnir to Jotunheim under the impression no one there would be able to lift it.
I mean he's sitting there in his ice palace, having a drink after singing 50 rounds of "Let it go" (because you are legally required to sing that song at least once if you gain an ice palace), probably trying to work out the logistics of adding a heating system to a castle made entirely of ice, and here comes Mjolnir the fuck out of nowhere with no Thor in sight, and then Loki finds he can pick it up, and because he's still unsure if there's something else going on, he yeets it out of Joutenheim.
edit: Okay looked again and Loki didn't toss it, presumably Thor called it back.
This is either Loki being worthy for some reason, or the biggest legacy of Aaron's Thor is breaking the worthiness enchantment entirely (Mjölnir was full destroyed*, the god tempest (ie. it's mind) let free, then reforged from scratch).
* If Aaron cared about continuity one bit that should have killed Thor Odinson on the spot.
I seem to recall Dr. Strange not being *definite* it would kill him, just that it was a possible danger. I think that whole period where Mjolnir judged him unworthy and bonded with Jane Foster instead might have broken the connection between them.
Also this was the last reforging before Aaron took over so there is no "someone else already dealt with this" here.
Aaron's Thor in my opinion would have been a lot more internally consistent if he didn't forget this bit. (Like of course Thor, or that sliver of Thor, would judge Jane worthy no matter his current feelings about himself and his own kind.)
By this point Thor dying is a joke (literally, Aaron made a '9th death of Thor anybody cared to count' joke after which Thor was fine in a page turn) and generally death is even more cheap on the mythological side of Marvel than everywhere else in the MU.
It might explain why Thor took the "If I reforge Mjölnir using your soul you die when it gets destroyed again" bargain though... if that happens, so what?
Also if Aaron remembered the this tidbit, then... the next arc would have started 2 issues earlier (and the Jane!Thor, all gods are unworthy because what Fury whispered would make more sense).
I'm just saying not remembering this probably made for a less consistent and logically sound story.
I'm hoping that this is actually a tie-in to the recent Loki series, where Thor and Tony were all "yeah sure, the day you come in wielding Mjolnir, you can join the Avengers."
It's probably more of a tie-in to the recent Thor stories where we've seen a future Loki capable of wielding the hammer.
I'd love it if Loki found himself genuinely worthy of Mjolnir. It would fuck with Thor so hard. And right now, Thor's being an immense douche and deserves fucking with.
Beta Ray Bill gets jobbed a lot. I mean not that Herald Thor + Skyfather power isn't beyond him. But I'd love an acknowledgment that him and Thor were never equals. He got the Thor powers by beating down Thor and picking up Mjølnir.
He was more powerful than Thor before he added Thors powerset.
Well, he beat Thor down pretty conclusively in a fistfight. I'd say Thor's power over weather and all the stuff he uses Mjolnir to do is the greater portion of his power than strength and toughness. But within those limits, Bill did outdo him.

Also, just like that I find myself inspired with a concept for a DCU Weight gain fetish fanfic.
Dr. Fate: Zatanna, are you okay?
Zatanna (Now 500 pounds and dressed like Dr. Fate): I am Zatanna no longer, call me, DOCTOR FAT!
Dr. Fate: Um, Nabu? Explain?
Nabu: Look, I ran through a couple of early prototypes okay? Mistakes were made, I don't want to talk about it. Short version you dodged a bullet.
Dr. Fate: I suppose I should be grateful there isn't a Helmet of Fart.
Nabu:.....
Dr. Fate:..... Goddammit Nabu.
Nabu: I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.
