Elsewhere, the reporter Yuko Yagi was being driven to dinner with Bruce Wayne - dinner that'd been canceled, but then unexpectedly un-canceled.
On the Gotham waterfront, Batman watched for any suspicious activity, any hint of trafficking in the drug Fanatic - the drug found in the bodies of the previous fake Gotham rogues, all of whom'd died horrific deaths while in custody.
He heard laughter from a docked boat nearby, and went to investigate.
" Welcome aboard, Batman! "
The fake Joker, Yuko bound by his feet, smiled at him.
The " Joker " straightened the vial.
The new Joker leaned forward.
Batman rewound what he'd fired from his belt.
" Do you need a fix? A Fanatic fix? "
" No.. no.. it's not that kind of drug.. "
The sweating clown laughed as the boat began moving under someone else's power.
" Who is it, ' Joker '? Who's taken over? "
" Who's behind this, ' Joker '?! "
" I want you to know, great benefactor, that I bear you no ill will.. " said the dying man to a camera in the room.
" You are a great man, and you did something wonderful for me..
" .. you made me somebody.. just for a while.. "
The man playing the Joker, laughter on his lips, sank to the floor.
" Fool.. you poor fool..
Batman escaped the trap - the boat's collision course with that bridge - with Yuko.
She woke up in the Batcave.
Wandering around, her hand reflexively went to her minicam, which she clicked once and again.
" Your camera was damaged, I'm afraid. "
" Oh! Batman! "
" I'd offer to show you around, but you seem to be doing fine yourself. "
Her thumb obstructed someone's view.
The data worked out to " Bruce Wayne ".
" .. and it's a good one. "
The watcher turned away from his unknowing eye, putting a call in to his willing hand.
" These are my instructions. Do not deviate..
As Batman drove Yuko back to her hotel, the one who'd been tasked got ready.
On their way, Batman aired his thoughts to Yuko - the Fanatic in the fake villains was an advanced form, one produced by a genius with the resources to proliferate his work.
That genius - perhaps his " biggest fan " from the yacht - was aiming some of those resources at him, making copies of his enemies to be used like bullets.
Batman's opining on the motive behind those works was interrupted by a familiar shape, standing in the middle of the road.
" Get out of my car..
" Impostor. "
The real Batman's feet hit the ground.
