Two-Face had been foiled again in Gotham City by the Batman.

A news crew from Tokyo, who'd got themselves into the criminal's clutches in their pursuit of the Batman as story, was being criticized by Commissioner Gordon.

" Your conduct was inexcusable - comparable to our worst yellow journalism. "

He paused to take a phone call that shocked him.

" I have a.. strange ending for your story, Ms. Yagi, Mr. Nagai..

" The suspect died on the way to the county jail. "

Back at the Batcave, Batman was wondering about the dead Two-Face, a definite imposter (" [Harvey] Dent is alive and well and buttoning up his coat in the back, in a padded cell at Arkham. ").

That night, Bruce Wayne was being driven to dinner by Alfred - when he noticed something, and had Alfred double back to check out.

He pulled up to someone being menaced by two with bad intentions.

Alfred drove them back to her hotel.

" You're.. you're Bruce Wayne, aren't you? "

" Guilty. You're from Japan, aren't you? "

" Yes - I'm Yuko Yagi.. I'm a reporter, here with a TV crew. "

She shut the car door.

The next day, Yuko got her producer Nagai to extend their time in Gotham by a day.

That night, the police arrived at a scene where apparently-the-Penguin was blowing up one of his own hideouts.

Yuko and her crew were there too - both parties heard the criminal squawking, and rushed over.

Later, there was another:

That cop's guess was borne out when Batman made the scene.

" Batman! Oh, Batman.. I have the best riddle for you.. "

" I'd rather you answer my riddle - "

Batman took him down.

" Are you the Riddler? "

" No.. no fair.. That's my riddle.. "

The " Riddler " was taken into custody - where he, and the " Penguin ", went the way of " Two-Face ".

Television also carried the news of the villains.

While that mysterious man mused, Jim Gordon worried about Fanatic: " .. this must be that new variation I've heard about.

" Word on the street is that it's ten times as powerful as Fanatic. "

The mystery of who was responsible for this bothered him.

At her hotel, Yuko found herself being invited to dinner with Bruce Wayne.

She accepted, and was taken to Wayne Manor, where she had a meal and conversation with Bruce.

She turned the topic to Batman: " There are rumors you two know each other.. "

She turned to face him.

The shining Bat-Signal prompted Yuko to excuse herself.

" I understand.. " said Bruce.

" Your job comes first. That's true for many people. "

After she'd gone, he left on his job - in the Batmobile.

The scene he was heading to was again the police, Yuko and her colleagues - plus gawking Gothamites.

There was another familiar Gotham face at the center of it - the Joker, atop a mound of pills.

" It's free sample night here at the park, Gothamites! "

Batman considered the clown.

He heard the pitch..

.. and went for the salesman.

The bomb went off, scattering the Fanatic to the crowd - and giving its dealer cover to escape.

The Gotham police, the foreign news crew, and Batman were left with his mystery.

Later, at the Batcave, Batman received a fax from Commissioner Gordon - the Joker was requesting his company at Arkham Asylum.

He went.

" In a way, coming here was the smartest thing you could have done.. "

The Joker told him something he'd learned from his " well-connected attorney " - Fanatic wasn't the product of any of Gotham's local players, but someone from outside.

" I suspect there's a second drug, Joker - an advanced form of Fanatic that these impostors have been taking.

" The pills your doppelganger dispensed last night were strong medicine.. but no different than the Fanatic already in circulation. "

" Does that mean this pale imitation of me is fated to die a mummy's death?! "

The Joker laughed.

" Oh, Batman.. you are a great friend.. I haven't had a good laugh in days.. "

As I said regarding the first chapter, this story rises a bit above all the other 'playing with the action figures' stories by having the various characters be imitations of the originals, and used for the some sinister purpose -- in other words, someone is literally turning people into the action figures, and discovering the reasons behind that becomes the real mystery of the story.

This is interesting art. It's manga-style, but the mangaka incorporates a lot of Western stylizations, such as that Kelley Jones shadow-wrapped Batman.

Kia Asamiya, that's a blast from the nineties. Part of me wonders why he was big then, his stuff was never really all that great.
